Humdinger, I have the same style insert on my 27-2. I really didn't pay that much attention when I bought it many years ago. I don't think it's a factory modification. BTW, nice 17-4.

I just called the gun library and it is sold. The person I talked to said there were only two Smith's left out of a collection of maybe 30, a model 57 and a .357 I didn't ask about. I just had to call.:D
