    Parts for original Top Breaks

I need a few parts for an original S&W Top Break. The parts I'm looking for appear to be standard on the Schofield, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Model Russians, and the New Model #3. Question: Does anyone here know who might stock old parts like this?

Question regarding First Model American repair

A friend of mine has given me his original First Model American to fix. The First Model American had a hammer actuated cylinder stop. A trigger actuated cylinder stop was first used in the Schofield a few years later. When I took this First Model American apart, I discovered that someone had put...

2011 calendar 'Guns of the Old-Timers'

I hope this is not out of place and if it is, moderators please remove it and accept my apologies. I made a ‘Guns of the Old Timers’ calendar for 2011. Three of the months have old single action sixguns from the last half of the 1800's, including two vintage S&W's, and the rest of the months...

Assy number location for OOM Russian

I am wondering where the assembly number is located for the frame of a 2nd Model American Russian Model (OOM). I can find an assy no. on the cylinder, on the latch, and on the barrel (just behind the latch), but I cannot find one for the frame itself, just the serial number.

Number of original 2nd Model American 44 Russian Commercial

I've got Charlie Pate's book and it is a wealth of information, but I just can't figure out exactly how many original S&W 2nd Model American Commercial Russian sixguns were produced. I seem to recall it was around 2,600 but I don't want to go on my faulty memory and the detailed numbers that Mr...

On the hunt for a 2nd Model American

I have a friend who would very much like to acquire an original S&W 2nd Model American in either 44 American or 44 Russian. He does not care if it has been refinished, so long as it locks up tight, indexes properly, and can still be shot on special occasions. If you can email or PM me to point...

    Sunday Afternoon Sixgun Shenanigans (photos)

Well men, I've been wondering what the original load of 23 grains of black powder would do out an original S&W 2nd Model American Russian Model (chambered for the 44 Russian). Mike Venturino only put 19 grains of FFFg in his for velocity of 740 fps. I have a very non-traditional soft cast Elmer...

    Tolerances for Top Break latches?

A couple friends of mine would really like to acquire an original S&W Model 3 in one of its configurations (NM#3, 2nd Mod American, DA, etc.). Their budget dictates that they are looking for one that is well used, almost a beater, but still a shooter. I'm trying to help them. One question I have...

Question about original 44 Russian cartridges

I've been pouring through Charles Pate's Smith & Wesson American Model and am surprised at the variety of cartridges that were available for the 44 Russian. Some had 246 grain bullets, others had 255 grain bullets. There were both black powder cartridges and later on, smokeless cartridges made...

Replacement grips for original 2nd Mod American

The original walnut grips on my 2nd Model American are in pretty nice condition. I do not want to put any accidental scuffs or nicks in them. To preserve the original grips, I would like to take them off and store them safely, and use replacement grips instead. I'm actually thinking of putting...

Photos of your antique S&W Model Top Breaks

The great thread on steel and leather got me thinking we should have a similar thread for antique top breaks. Here are two photos of my only two antique top breaks. The first one is a 2nd Model American Commercial Russian Model from around 1873 and the second one is a New Model #3 that letters...

Shooting an original 2nd Model American

I've been just itching to shoot this old sixgun, made around 1873. It is a 2nd Model American, 44 Russian model, commercial version, with an 8" barrel. Photo is shown below ... It was a bit cool outside today when I went to the range. We have an indoor range, but I wanted to chronograph...

Photos of my 2nd Model American

I finally got some time to take a couple snapshots of my 2nd Model American chambered in 44 Russian (original chambering, from markings on barrel). Serial number is 26382. Judging by the serial number, it seems to have been made around 1873, although I do plan to get a letter from Roy Jinks. It...

    Question on 2nd Model American

I received my S&W 2nd Model American in 44 Russian caliber (also known as the 1st Model Russian), today. I was wondering about the various numbers on the old sixgun. The serial number on the frame is 26382 and the same number is on the inside of one of the grips. The grip without the number...

Info Chart for S&W 1st and 2nd Model Americans

Well men, every since I sent payment off for my Model 3 Second Model American chambered in 44 Russian, I've been nursing a growing curiosity about these guns. It's got to the point where I can't wait till Christmas to get my first book on them, so I'm ordering Chicoine's book right away. Anyway...

How to get quick factory info on old S&W's

When a fellow is purchasing an old Winchester, for a fee he can get the factory info by fax or phone within 24 hours. Is there anything like that for S&W's? I know about the letter method, but I'm wondering if there's any faster way.

    Old photo's with Model 3 S&W's

Below is a photo sent to me by another Canadian collector of old Model 3 S&W's. Both photos are supposed to have been taken around 1885 and are of men who were part of the Rocky Mountain Rangers, a Canadian paramilitary force that fought against the 2nd Indian/Metis uprising (Riel Rebellion) in...

    Louis L'Amour and the S&W 44 Russian

A friend of mine who has read some Louis L'Amour books, told me today that there is frequent mention of the S&W 44 Russian in L'Amour's novels. Does anyone know which of the Model 3 S&W's he specifically mentions in his writings?

What can you tell me about the 1st Model Russian?

I've seen photos, and read Mike Venturino's article, but that's about it. I'd be interested in things like serial number range, dates of manufacture, and any other interesting tidbits and trivia.

45 Schofield strength vs 44 Russian strength

I notice that the cylinder walls on the original 45 Schofield are significantly thinner than the chamber walls on the 44 Russian Model 3. Is there any record of the 45 Schofield having difficulties because of the thinner walls?
