Question about the forcing cone issue

My gun is a Model 19 with a heavier 4" barrel. Probably an LEO trade-in. Non-pinned barrel. Here's my load: Cast boolit - Lee 120 grain TC, powder coated and sized .358". (Designed for the 9mm, I believe). 4.6 grains of Unique. Is there any chance of cracking the forcing cone with...

    Follow-up on poor ignition - Model 18.

I posted a while back about ignition problems my 1958 Model 18 was having. I tried reaming the cylinders and replacing the mainspring with a Wolff spring. Neither of those fixes helped, so I ordered an extended-length strain screw from Wolff. That didn't help. Then I replaced the Wolff spring...

Still getting misfires with Model 18 after reaming

I reamed the cylinders, then installed a Woulff factory replacement spring (not reduced power). I cleaned and lubed the innards. Mainspring tension screw is fully seated. I checked end shake per the Larry Potterfield Youtube video. It measures .006. What's my next move? Is there a way to...

Removing ejector rod from Model 18

My Model 18 is from 1958. I just reamed the cylinders. I'm thinking of running some cold blue down the chambers on a Q-tip. But first I want to degrease the cylinders with some gun scrubber. I put 6 empties in the charge holes then clamped the ejector rod in a wood clamp. (My instructions...

Yet another question about my Model 18

I know all about reaming S&W 22 revolver cylinders. I have a reamer, bought it from Brownell's, and I used it on my Model 34 which had very tight cylinders. That gun really needed it. I've held off reaming the cylinders on my Model 18. Cases from standard velocity ammo don't stick...

    My Model 18 needs attention

Hello. Over the years I've disassembled/assembled my S&W's. I don't have a lot of them. Took my 1950's era Model 18 out yesterday and it had light primer strikes in DA mode. Average one/cylinder full. SA was fine. Do K Frame main springs ever need replaced, or do you just adjust tension at...

    Any info on this gun?

Sorry for the cryptic information but this is all I have. I'm asking about a S&W 32 HE, SN#8009. I was told, over the phone, that it is probably a 32-20, but he wasn't sure. I realize this isn't much to go on but I thought I'd give it a try. Thanks.

    Lightweight bullets in Model 19's

We've all heard about the cracked forcing cones that come from shooting hot 125 grain jacketed ammo in a Model 19. Does that problem happen with other, lightweight projectiles in the Model 19? I'm wondering, how fast can I push the Lee 105 grain SWC, powder coated, out of my 357 without...

    Thinking of joining another club

Gun club that is. My present club is very nice but it is 27 miles away. There is a not-so-nice club 5.5 miles away. I'm thinking of joining the closer one in addition to the other. It's hours are restricted but dang, it is so close. I could try it for a year. It would save on gas. My...

    Knife handle is it bone?

Sorry this isn't an S&W knife. Hope it's ok to post. I'm going to clean this knife up and use it. Even thought about replacing the sharpener by grinding/fashioning a replacement from a generic sharpener. I'm wondering if I can melt the glue here with a soldering iron and lift out the...

The story of my Model 19

Back in the 90's my friend decided he needed a gun. He had broken his neck in a car accident and was confined to a wheelchair. So me and him took a ride to Simpson's Limited in Galesburg, Il and started looking at police trade-ins. The guy behind the counter saw that my friend needed a gun...

Can cases be converted from small to large primer size?

I realize this would be a niche thing, but can it be done on calibers like the 38/357, for instance? I'm thinking maybe you could drill them out with something like a brad-point bit then finish with a primer pocket reamer. If you were making wax boolit loads, could you convert cases from...

    Model 34-1 sight travel

I would like to be able to move the rear sight blade on my 34-1 more to the right, but it runs out of travel. Is there any way I can modify the sight so that it moves more to the right? I'm trying to move Point Of Impact to the right. Thanks in advance.

I am going to give this nice Model 19 a workout

My friend was wheelchair bound for about 40 years. Back in the 80's he wanted a gun for self-defense so we got this. The gun was too much for him. A couple years ago, before he passed away, he sold it to me. The gun came with the box of ammo he bought with it. About 12 had been shot. It has...

    Home made wipe down cloth?

What would you use? What would be the best thing to spray on a soft cloth and keep handy to wipe down an EDC on a semi-daily basis? I carry both blue and SS guns. This wouldn't be for cleaning a gun that has been fired. Just one that's been carried.

    22 Hornets with .223" bore

If you ran across an older 22 Hornet with a 223 bore, could you size down modern bullets to fit? I would think you could. It's only .001". And I'm thinking you could polish down the expander ball on your sizing die so that your cases would hold the smaller bullets. Yes, No? What do you...

    Bolt hole on 638

I sent my 638 in to S&W to have the finish looked at. The gun came back with a letter that said the gun does not need service because it has an oversize bolt hole. I am totally confused. Here is a picture. I haven't fired it since it came back but it feels ok.

Main (hammer) spring for S&W 34. How often?

Shot my model 34 in a match a couple weeks ago and it did just fine. Took it out yesterday and it had two light strikes out of about 70 rounds. I was using Mini Mags both times. Seems I just replaced the hammer spring a couple years ago. Do they wear out that fast? Doesn't seem like they used to.

    Cartridge OAL varies

I have noticed that the OAL on the 9mm's I've been loading varies. It can vary by as much as .005" Is that too much? Today, I'm using Berry's 124 grain Target HP's and mixed brass. I've noticed the same phenomenon when loading my cast, powder-coated bullets. I'm wondering if maybe my...

    WTT J Frame Hi-Ride for X-Draw holster

Nice leather Don Hume holster to trade for equally nice J frame cross draw holster. This one doesn't fit my carry style, and I'm wanting something to use on my bicycle. I prefer a holster that would work with a humpback bodyguard revolver but will consider others.
