I gave up after several months of checking wholesalers, started watching Gunbroker, and finally snagged a factory new 986 for 50 bucks over wholesale price. Same story on a model 929 and equally good price from Gunbroker. It doesn't look like S&W will make another run of either of these guns...

I think you missed the point I intended to make. Short term ups and downs will occur for a variety of reasons, but history says prices for guns of reasonable quality, have ALWAYS increased, and will continue to increase over the LONG TERM. Pick any quality firearm you like and review market...

The 581 is not exactly plentiful, most were heavily used, and a NIB condition 581 is not easy to come by. A beat up shooter can be found in the $450-500 range and I would consider a new condition 581 a steal at $600.

Depends on how much effort and money you want to invest. Some have been using the small 2-2&1/2 HP DC motors and 110 volt controls from scrapped tread mills to add variable speed control to small machine tools. Several ways to do it....check google and youtube.
