Mod 29, .44 Magnum. Saw "Dirty Harry" movie when it first came out and went and bought one just like Harry. Got the same Bianchi shoulder rig too. $400 for the revolver and sold the rig at a gun show...too many straps and a bear to adjust. Still got the .44!!!!!

696 "no-dash" End of 1st year serial numbers...

Took the revolver out into the sunshine to get a good photo, only to discover that at some point the collar had cracked and fallen off. What I had done originally was to measure the O.D. of forcing cone and lathe made a SS ring that was a few thou under that measurement. The collar was thick...

    S&W model 696 .44 spl

I have a 696. I made up a SS collar for an interference fit over the O.D. of the forcing cone. I'm pushing a 205 gr cast bullet at approx 1000 fps. No problems yet, but then again I haven't shot it that much.

696 "no-dash" End of 1st year serial numbers...

I have 696 no dash # CBT 44xx, bought new 6 April 1997. later style thumb latch. As a side note, I did not like the rather thin O.D. of the barrel forcing cone. Looked like it could easily be damaged. So, I made up a SS collar to interference fit over the O.D. Perhaps this is why this model...

S&W 1917 Serial #13(PIC HEAVY)(UPDATE SEE LAST POST NEW PICS)(Letter Update Last Pic)

I'm curious, the direction of the number lettering on the grip bottom is such that there would only be room for 3 digits. After 999, the digits would have to be rotated 90 degrees. Did S&W not foresee 1,000 units+? Any thoughts?

    M696

I have a 696, no dash. I did notice the thin forcing cone and made of a SS ring to fit snuggly around it. Every little bit helps. Question; did the dash models have a thicker forcing cone?? I shoot 7.4 Unique/205 cast.

    M651 .22 mag..hammer block rod..

Thank you Joni....I did look up that model in an old 1939 Stoegers catalog and it's called a hammer block. As regards to my visual of the innards, it's dark and dirty in there...I seriously need to give it a cleaning....

    M651 .22 mag..hammer block rod..

Had to have a look at my 1917 (1937 Brazilian contract) and it has a different set-up. It's a springy thing set in the side plate that extends up to around the hammer face..I guess it's a block..hard to tell.
