    N Serial Number Info

Keep in mind the dates in the various books and charts are MANUFACTURE dates, not shipping dates. A letter is the only way to tell when it left the factory.

    Deal or Steal?

Need to know more about it. Looks to be a WWII era gun, perhaps a Victory model. Is it 38 S&W or 38 special? Serial number with any prefixes would help.

Best use of an old tooth brush

Oral-B makes a nice little electric brush that is great on both your teeth or your guns. Under $10 at Wal Mart. I have also found what is called a "Denture brush" to work well, a little bigger than a tooth brush, also cheap.

    USAA

Have been with USAA for over 50 years. Only have had a couple of claims and their response has been outstanding, they took care of everything quickly and fairly. They may cost more but I think when the stuff hits the fan they are worth the extra money.

    Serial number check please.

Keep in mind that the S&W Catalog dates are manufacture dates, not shipping dates. Guns might sit in the warehouse for years before being sent out and they did not leave in serial number order.

SWCA Post War .357 Magnum Database (Short Action - Pre-Model 27)

I had S79227, 5" barrel, manufactured October, 1950. I sold it to a guy in Dallas who has since passed away, don't know what his daughter did with it. I have asked but she won't reply :(

1954 K38 Worth it UPDATE with new photos UPDATE

That would go nicely next to my 1954 K22. I'd be on it in a flash if it's mechanically sound.

    Deposits in 586 cylinder

You can also use a small piece of a 3M Scotch Brite pad, it's nylon so it shouldn't scratch anything. Wrap it around a small (.22) jag. The light grey is equivalent to 0000 steel wool.

    Gun case labels??

I have used the reproduction labels twice, no intent to decieve. In both cases the glue on the original label failed and they fell off. I put the repo's on so I could tell what was in the box and the originals went in the box and went with the gun when sold.

    CLP

I have been told that straight ATF works well; it has detergents for cleaning and oils for lubrication/protection. I'm going to try it after my next range session.

    CLP

I have been told that it's Teflon that the liquid carries into places as a lube. Don't know if that's true or not, I'm not a chemist.

    Thread sealant/locker/?

If you are a fisherman keep an eye out for nail polish sales at the drug store. A few years ago I hit a sale and found several 50¢ bottles in the red/brown spectrum that touched up my chipped crank baits perfectly.

    Mystery Revolver???

It's interesting that there are no markings on either side of the barrel or frame. Did it ever have them? I'm thinking it may not a genuine S&W but one of the knockoffs from Spain or South America.
