This is a somewhat common issue. IWhat you have described is a bolt release spring problem. It is a very easy fix. YouTube is your friend on this one.

I have the Hiperfire 24-C in my 15-22. The hammer does strike a little low, but the face of the hammer is making contact with the rear flat of the firing pin. No misfires with 1500 rounds so far. It is unfortunate that yours is doing what it is.

I will be exploring the possibilities of storing something in the stock tube, if for no other reason than to reduce the noise of sound transfer when the rifle is fired.

The Hiperfire 24C that is in my 15-22 is fantastic. No creep, crisp break and very short reset. I do not know anyone from Hiperfire and have no connection with them other than buying the FCG from them.

The Russians did the same thing to the .22 cal. rifles they used in the Olympics. They found the sweet spot for ignition and it improved accuracy. It varied from rifle to rifle.

Interesting, good for S&W. It just amazes me that Magpul or Hogue do not make an overmolded handgrip that will follow the contours of the 15-22 lower receiver. I realize that it will not effect function, but that gap just bugs me.

I will be picking up a 15-22 Sport this week, will post here if it is also overly gunked up. I have Hoppes no.9 and patches along with CLP and a bore snake. Sounds like the OP would have to use multiple snakes to clean the barrel. Easier to keep using fresh patches on new barrels, YMMV.
