    Hammer or nose moving?

Thanks all. Hammer nose bushing is nice and round. But, when pulling back the hammer slowly it cocks just before the cyl locks. It takes a bit more pulling back to lock the cyl. On a slow DA trigger pull, if the cylinder stops before the hammer drops I can't see or hear it. It seems to stop...

    Hammer or nose moving?

Huh. Didn't think about timing, but that makes sense. I'll swap from a well-functioning 66 and check. Thanks!

    Hammer or nose moving?

I picked up a 66 no-dash that had a trigger job and jeweled internals. Someone took their time with this baby. Very smooth in single and double action, but for one out of every 10 shots or so the hammer nose strikes the very edge of the primer, not enough to ignite. Only happens DA. SA, while...

Remote humidity monitor for my safe

Living in Florida I'm always fighting air cancer. I have two Stack-On Cordless Dehumidifiers in the safe but aren't always on top of when they need to be recharged. Bought a Remote Weather Station that has both an indoor monitor and a wireless 'outdoor' monitor (Ambient Weather Wireless...

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

Thanks for the info Ralph. Dunno if I'll pursue a letter on these given they are conversions/parts guns but good for future ref. I sent in a membership form and check to the Foundation at the end of Dec. I have an older Pontiac and the Pontiac Historical Society (PHS) does something similar...

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

Yep. And thanks Jim for posting a pic. Looks like I've scored a Bowen conversion. Thanks to all for the education, and saving me $75!

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

I did, and didn't see anything. When I checked it looked like the ejector rod had some brownish crud around it. Probably need to disassemble and clean, since I'm in rust territory (FL). Any way to tell if it is a LH or RH thread? Given it is likely a conversion and not original, how can I tell...

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

Can the markings on the side be sanded down or filled enough to re-mark the caliber? If so it makes more sense. Heck, now that I know it's a shooter I may get a .44-40 lever gun, chaps, a fancy nickname, and join SASS! In my "spare" time. :D

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

Thanks all. Shoulda phrased this post in the form of a question! Good news is that I can shoot both with a clear conscious. Part of the fun I have in this hobby is learning. The SCS&W notes in the .38/44 HD (prewar) section that frame serials 35037 to 62335 were used for .44 HEs and this one...

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

Hmmm. Might explain the caliber. Does look a lot like my .38/44 HD. Serial on the barrel inside the shroud matches the frame, but there are differences, like the text on the top of the barrel, only one line of text on the frame, and no small logo on the left frame. Would someone doing a barrel...

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

The 2nd is a high polish finish. The 3rd is a more matte finish. Dunno why, but it could be a full special-order configuration given the caliber. Hopefully a letter will shed some light. There are some marks under the stocks, but not many (first 2 pics below). The 2nd has a big R-S, 674, and...

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

I thought the S&WHF did the letters for S&W. What is the difference? I sent in a membership to the Foundation a couple of weeks ago and haven't received anything back yet (expected it would take a while, so no surprise). Is a Foundation request different from the regular LoA request? I've only...

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

Maybe, but if so the factory did it. The barrel serial matches the frame. Hopefully a letter will clarify.

    .44 HE 3rd Model in .44-40 and a surprise 2nd Model

Scored a couple of HEs in a live auction a few months back. Both were somewhat mis-labeled but hey, them's the breaks. Finally got around to taking pics. First up, a 5" .44 HE 3rd Model. A Wolf & Klar special from '37. Sporting a very pretty set of stags, I assume re-blued both from the almost...

    .41 Mag Virgin No More

Maybe, but I was shooting 210 gr JSPs and it felt like every bit of my .44 Mag. I'll keep experimenting now that she's back in action.

    .41 Mag Virgin No More

Traded [a Mosin Nagant rifle] for a 657 a few weeks back. Needed some parts (thanks @fs-arf!) and I finally got her rebuilt and out to the range this afternoon. Oof. That is one barker of a round. I see why folks use it for hunting. I think it kicks more than my 29, but the 29 has a few more...

FOUND: Rear target sight, complete or leaf, old style

Need to refresh the rear target sight on my 657. N (but I believe K->N are the same) with the squared front. White Outline .160 is preferred, but can work with any height or just the leaf if that's all I can get. Also need the front blade, but those I can find elsewhere unless someone has a...
