Help! 396 Mountain Lite Barrel Shroud Defect

I worry what heat and recoil will do to it. Might be like a cracked hot windshield in the summertime.

Help! 396 Mountain Lite Barrel Shroud Defect

Thanks for the input guys. Looking at mine under a magnifying glass, it appears that there is a triangular metal burr on the frame, which produced a similar sized divot on the barrel shroud when the shroud was applied. I've never seen this on another 396. BTW, Bluedot, this barrel IS the...

Help! 396 Mountain Lite Barrel Shroud Defect

It's that little triangle/wedge near the top of the barrel shroud where the shroud meets the frame.

    Not Really a Bear Thread

Get the Toklat. You'll love it + .44 mag is minimal for grizzly. Edit-I see you got it already. Mine saved my bacon last year from an angry 250 lb. sow. I'd keep it if I were you.

Help! 396 Mountain Lite Barrel Shroud Defect

In purchasing an otherwise perfect no-lock 396 Mountain Lite, would this defect be a deal-breaker? It appears to be a molding/casting defect in the outer barrel shroud. Called S&W and they no longer have the barrel shrouds in stock. From what I can tell, this is only a cosmetic defect...

Can a cylinder gap be too small?

Thanks fellas. I'll hit the auto parts stores tomorrow. This 629 is my new "go everywhere in the woods with me" gun. It's just too humid and rainy in the summertime for my 29-10. I hog hunt with handguns year round, and run into rattlesnakes frequently. This year alone, my 29-10 saved me...

Can a cylinder gap be too small?

Wow. You guys are great. Thanks everybody. I generally don't shoot lead bullets in my .44's (also have an Anaconda). I remember reading John Ross's essay on his Performance Center .500's about the barrel nut being necessary to get such a tight cylinder gap. Trust me, this 629 did it without...

Can a cylinder gap be too small?

I'm a newbie here, and this is my first "real" post. Forgive me if this is a stupid question. About two weeks ago, I got a brand new 629-6 (Made Dec. 2013) 6" half lug. I already had a 29-10 Classic. Comparing the cylinder gaps of the two, I really can't see any daylight at all on the 629...

    Howdy

Thanks. Hate to tell you, but it's in the 70's here and the skeeters are already out. Edit-BTW, those factory hand smashers are already off that 629, replaced with some nice Hogue round to square butt conversions. My hand is still hurting from shooting 130 rounds this weekend with those...

    Howdy

Well, I got a brand new 629-6 for Valentine's day, so I figured I should sign up and learn something from all of you. I also have a Model 29-10 I got for my birthday a couple of years ago. Miz Kiz has pretty good taste when it comes to gifts. Next up on my want list is a .500, either a...
