Thanks K22fan. Your explanation sounds viable. This is difficult because the gun is being offered from a estate type of shop and was brought in with a few others of various calibers. To me, the gun is in fine condition but needing a good cleaning. Perhaps I missed seeing any prefix letters on...

That is a most interesting story and yes being a criminal trial Judge, most likely was carried for his own protection at a time when court were underprotected. Odd that such a historic family piece ever found its way to a gun show! But so lucky for you...enjoy!

A handsome collection. I have also started collecting these historic S&W steel works of art arms and will purchase one every chance I can.
