How tight is tight enough - Can anyone identify with these pictures?

yes, thanks for catching that... empirical was what I was going for. I'll make the edit now.

How tight is tight enough - Can anyone identify with these pictures?

Thats actually a good idea. The other issue I see with this set-up is you're pressing against thin brass cases that will absorb an uncertain amount of pressure as they distort (dent) that may lead to a false reading?

How tight is tight enough - Can anyone identify with these pictures?

These has been many “how tight” discussions on this forum, and others, regardless of of the type of gun being discussed. It’s an important question and one that rarely gets resolved unless actual torque values and torque tools are available and explained. The most common answer is snug, and...

Help Identify These Parts - Thumbpieces

I believe that's correct. the split lug fits on an older style bolt with a raised portion below the threads for the nut. And the research I did show both versions as old style forged... neither is MIM. the "flat-head screw" is a milled stamp... not a mold mark.

Help Identify These Parts - Thumbpieces

Hi Muddoc! Thanks so much for offering to do that. Yes, please do when you get home... unless someone else is willing to un-screw a couple of thumpieces and post some photos of them... then you're off the hook my friend ;-) This no-big-deal project morphed into mission for me and I just want to...

Help Identify These Parts - Thumbpieces

I think the top set in the pic's are mid to late 70's 29-2 nickel thumbpieces - with the flat-head screw stamp but not feeling 100% sure. Do the top two in the 1st and 2nd pictures look identical, or am I seeing some difference because of the angle, and staring at them too long ? The set on...

Interesting or odd - hand fitted thumb-piece

I wish I could answer that but if it was part of the reasoning for the alteration... it was a failure... because the uneven reduction the height of the lug (what I'm calling the portion that enters the frame hole) in addition to everything else you see in the photos, it sits too low and now does...

It might solve the rear dragging on frame problem. What shims would fit a bolt//thumbpiece?

Interesting or odd - hand fitted thumb-piece

Very good question. If I can find the correct forged thumbpiece for this 29-2 in nickel, I may only need to file the lug to fit it to the frame. I really don’t know if it will require plating that area? If it does, I’ll get a blued one. Much easier to find new one, and I’ll have it plated after...

Interesting or odd - hand fitted thumb-piece

I believe it works well as-is also, except that it sits low enough to scratch the frame a bit, but functionally fine. Please see my post #11 That and it does look like its been Bubba'd quite a bit but it also appears to have been modified before it was nickel pated at the factory. It's sort of...

Interesting or odd - hand fitted thumb-piece

To the best of my knowledge, which is limited, and certainly when it comes to action work, I was of the understanding that the thumbpiece is an external part, a tool so to speak, used only to actuate the bolt in order to open the cylinder. Mention has been made above that some modification to...

Interesting or odd - hand fitted thumb-piece

The video I'm familiar with... "How to install a spring kit (trigger job) with Jerry Miculek" doesn't show any work done on the thumbpiece. Do you have a link to the one you mentioned.. I'm curious about that modification to thumbpiece and what it accomplishes in terms of the improving the...

Thanks for the interest! Here are the photos. I tried to keep the "fitted" one on the right side.

Interesting or odd - hand fitted thumb-piece

Do I have a "special" thumbpiece, or just an everyday fitting issue of the late 70's era Smiths? I recently bought an excellent nickel 29-2 and had an opportunity to compare it to another that could be a twin sister. The only thing I saw that was different was the cylinder release thumbpiece...

Thank you! Yes, the grips are on the darker side, but I've seen them vary quite a bit and I like them all. I'm just happy that they're original and the condition is about 99% The box is in great shape also. You said it was within a couple of months of yours. I'm not familiar with the dating...

    Help Date/Info this S&W Revolver

It's a nickel MOD. 29-2 4" barrel, N Pre-fix, and appears to be all original. Serial # is N621655 It has an N under the grips, and also stamped on the cylinder. Seems like some nickels have an N stamp on the cylinder and some don't. Any reason for that, or just another Smith way of marking that...
