One other symptom I've just noticed - it's difficult to lock the cylinder into place in the last bit of travel. It's also very difficult to unlock the cylinder on certain chambers.

If anyone is interested I went ahead and had this gun lettered by Roy Jinks, he was nice enough to look up the mismatched barrel's serial as well and confirm both numbers were shipped to Japan via Takata & Co. The frame at least went over in 1890.

Well I'm never absolutely sure of anything in this life but I have shot it, two rounds total now without issue. Loading up a whole cylinder and trusting it to time properly on its own is another matter, possibly bearing further investigation by another gunsmith.
