    638 Hard Chrome Review

I forgot to add that the changes reduced weight from 14.6 to 14.2 oz.

    638 Hard Chrome Review

That is strange. Maybe they messed up the timing on one with too thick a coating do just stopped.🤷 I also wanted them to do a trigger job/light stoning, but not mess with any factory springs. They said they wouldn’t do a trigger job without also shaving springs. I thought that was crazy.

    638 Hard Chrome Review

Around 30 coats total. However, a lot of those were sanded back to fill grain so I’m not sure what the true film thickness is. The final polish was 3 coats of Renaissance Wax. I also baked it for 2 100+ deg f days in the Texas sun.

From what I understand, S&W may fix that for free under warranty.

    638 Hard Chrome Review

The way it was explained to me, hard chrome won’t electroplate well on aluminum. They first plated the aluminum with nickel, which sticks well to aluminum and also takes the hard chrome. The extra nickel step along with chemically stripping the plastic from the aluminum before bead blasting was...

    638 Hard Chrome Review

$600 if you count the new grip! Yeah, I wanted it a bit tougher than just laminated aluminum and I just love the way wood grips look. 50 rounds through it and I doubt I’ll ever shoot it again, so it’ll last forever.

    638 Hard Chrome Review

I was trying to say I was happy with the hard chrome after I put a bit of work into detailing the finish, not so much that I was very happy with that company.

Perfect mirror finish. Soooo much elbow grease.

    638 Hard Chrome Review

The original finish was great. I actually like the laminated aluminum look better than hard chrome. However, aluminum just scratches so easy and I wanted more durability. I accidentally scratched it the first time I disassembled it!😂

    638 Hard Chrome Review

In case anyone else is considering it, here’s my review of hard chroming my new 638 with only 50 rounds through it. I had APW do the work based on recommendations from others. Service-wise, I think the owner may have been one of the rudest and worst to deal with, but I wasn’t looking to make...

    Hogue wood finish

Thanks! Its soaking in a stainless tumbler of mineral spirits right now. Once the wax is gone, should be short work to fill the grain and polish.

    Hogue wood finish

Hey all, I just got some hogue tigerwood grips for my j frame. The figure is beautiful. However, the finish leaves a lot to be desired but expected at the price point. What is the finish and how do I remove it for a bit of sanding and refinish? Mineral spirits? Sanding? Thanks for any...

    Pocket Carry Poll

Forum members here are so nice and thank you all for the great responses! I use the ComfortTac micro for my new 638 DA/SA. I don’t care about printing or worry about ADs with the heavy trigger, but I don’t like it spinning and being hard on the pocket corners without a holster. Only pocket...

    Pocket Carry Poll

Without getting into the mess of whether or not you should, how many of you pocket carrying snub noses don’t use a holster. Any personal incidents? Please no preaching or berating from pocket holster enthusiasts. I’m interested in first hand from members, not a guy I know stories. Also the...

    Wood grips

Hola a todos! I just bought my first S&W, a 638. I immediately disassembled to thoroughly clean out factory gunk, as I do with all new weapons. I promptly lost the firing pin spring.😂 New one on the way, but in the interim I’m trying to replace the ugly rubber grip. I admit I only really...
