This study is unique with respect to the methodology that is being used by the authors. Instead of drawing conclusions based on data from various secondary sources, such as FBI databases, the authors use a qualitative technique that offers a richer description of how guns are used defensively. The first part of the study also goes into detail as to how various statistical methods can often under or over report the use of firearms for defensive purposes. They also readily admit that their own study most likely under-reports incidents because cases that don't result in dramatic outcomes are rarely reported in the media.

Great read for sure.
