best bullet with moon clips

Hello,
I just got a 627 in 38-357 and was wondering what bullet loads the easiest with moon clips. I have never used moon clips before. I mold my own 158 swc for my other guns but think they might hang up with moon clips. Would I be better off with a round nose or truncated cone?

As long as your finished cartridge is the correct length ( to factory specs ), the type of bullet doesn't matter.

It matters for a speed reload.
I always load clips (or speedloaders) with roundnose.
If I have semiwadcutters on hand, I will load the gun with them to start an IDPA or IPSC stage.

If you are not speedloading, just packaging your ammunition on clips, the SWCs will do ok.

Definately round nose for quicker reloads. I use the Brownells clips. Remington will be the easiest to put in the clip bc the groove is cut deeper. I use the Rem in every other position. I'll put whatever in the ones between. If all Rem they wobble too much and you need to jiggle them too much to load. I use needle nose pliers to push them in. Good luck, Larry

I use round nose 158 grn moly-coated bullets from black bullets international. Round nose lead works good, I found the moly-coated bullets feed a little easier.

I use 160 gr round nose from Billy Bullets. They are moly coated and shoot extremely well in my 627, with moon clips.

Thanks for the advice.
I want something that will load quickly. I would like to try a couple of the local pistol matches. I'm not sure what different matches they have but I would like to try shooting them to get used to the gun. They shoot practice matches so will let you shoot about any type of pistol as long as you are safe. I have shot a few matches with a 1911 but thought a revolver might be a lot of fun and I have always been partial to revolvers.

Since you cast your own, try the Lee 358-150-1R. It loads very short and the crimp groove makes for a smooth transition.

I've been using it for years and a couple of friends have tried it and switched over as well.

Your 627 is perfect for ICORE Limited or the various Steel plate matches. USPSA Revolver only allows 6 shots to be fired before a reload. Miscount on one stage and you take the express train to Open. As such, it definitely favors the 625 though you could shoot the 627 in Production just for grins. You'd have to be awfully good to be competitive against the ten shot bottom feeders. I believe that IDPA only lets you load 6. If so, that would make a 627 a losing proposition.

Thanks for the suggestion of the lee mold. I will look into a six cavity mold. I am past my competitive years but enjoy the matches. Good to be familiar with your firearms and lots of good company.

Buy the best moon clips from Hearthco.com. or you can get them from TK Custom.com.

These moons hold your brass with no wiggle and makes reloading much faster. If I remember, TI sells them for $59.99 for 10. Expensive but for competition they are worth it.

If you want the cheap ones get them from Brownells or directly from Ranch Products for about $.75 each.

I ordered the Ranch clips. I don't shoot many matches any more and they seem to be ok on the reloads. I will be getting a round nose mould and will try a steel match for fun.

Back when I was shooting a lot of steel plates with my 38 moonclipped guns, I loaded Berry 38~Super 130 or 150 grain round nose bullets for several reasons. They were lighter than 158's, were much cleaner than lead, and were not as "blunt" as any of the 38/357 round nose bullets. I used a 9mm expander in my dies so that the cases gripped the bullets sufficiently. The speed loading went VERY WELL. The accuracy was just fine. That silly thousandth or two never seemed to matter. I wasn't meeting any power factor in particular, but making IPSC minor would surely be an easy thing to do, with either bullet. Hope that helps.

Believe it or not...I have been using 9mm (.356) 147 grain truncated cone projectiles and enjoy the heck out of them in my model 28, 14,15, 66, 686,etc.
Not a full moon clip however , using HKS speedloaders in USPSA/IDPA?ICORE. but they simply drop in with no effort on my part.

In my 25-2 .45 with full moon clips FMJ is the only way to fly when you are in a hurry...ie. in a match!
Might work for you as well....

The Ranch moons work nicely with Winchester brass. I found them way too loose with Remington, Federal and Star and only OK with Speer.
