Default ACRONYM'S

I'am in need of some help here real bad ; I love this S&W forum , but for someone as unfarmiliar to shooting sports as I the use of acronyms is completely confusing . example IDPA,PPC, LEO , are these shooting sports or people ? A list of these acronyms and definations and what type of shooting would greatly help some of us . You guys use more of these than the railroad , and I thought I'd never say that ! Thanks any help would be greayly appreciated .

greg,

Just make a list and post it, or when one pops-up, ask. It's not rocket science and no one here will flame you in any way.
Although there are some very knowledgable folks here, no one member knows it all.

I'll get you started with a few common terms:
RB = round butt usually an RB frame is easier to conceal.
SB = square butt, sometimes preferred as easier to grip
HB = heavy barrel, that is: not a taper or "pencil" barrel.
SA = single action
DA = double action
SAO = single action only
SS = stainless steel: almost any S&W handgun where the model # begins with a 6; a 686 is a stainless gun, the 586 is the same gun in blue (or carbon steel). Stainless guns will not, to my knowledge, have a nickle finish.
I frame, J frame, K frame, N frame, X frame are the most commonly encountered S&W revolver frame sizes from smallest to largest.
Semi-Auto pistols come in first, second and third generations, and probably, with the advent of the M&P pistols, a fouth generation.
M&P = military & police.
SCSW, also known as The Book = Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica and Nahas. This is a must-have reference, the 3rd edition is the latest

Study these, there WILL be a test!

Mike

Just to be fair, IDPA is also the only association that allows SO's (range officers anywhere else) to give you an FTDR, Failure to do Right, penalty for NOT violating the rules but for doing something your SO thinks SHOULD be a violation, if there was a rule. Go figure.

I take it that celibacy doesn't bother you. Or do you just take matters into your own hand?

TLA = Three-Letter Acronym

When I wrote for a community newspaper in a town where merchants routinely submitted press releases about what they thought were news events but which the paper's owner considered advertisements, we called such press releases SSPOC -- pronounced siss-pock. That stands for "self-serving piece of ****" where the obscured word is an anagram of the name of a family of freshwater fish.
