Competition Newbie- Any comps I can shoot with my 617?
I'm interested in trying some different types of competition shooting and was wondering if there is anything out there for a rimfire revolver.

Steel Challenge is rimfire friendly, and I believe ICORE has started a .22 cal. division. You might want to check with your local ICORE clubs.

Steel challenge is always a good place for 617s - those and informal steel matches. Not much good for anything else but life fire practice.

If you have any interest in Conventional Pistol (a/k/a "Bullseye") shooting there is no reason you cannot use your 617.
While there is no doubt semi-autos dominate in these events there are still a few hold-outs using revolvers.

Yup, when I'm not chasing the High Master card with my Hammerli (and I'm on-track to get it this season), I use my 617 for my local .22-cal Bullseye pistol league. Just because I can (and because someone said it was 'difficult').
Note - you don't have to use a red-dot, and truth be told, all the red-dot tells you is how much you're wobbling that day. You can shoot open sights and do very well; a lot of Conventional Pistol national records were set using revolvers and open sights.

ten shot 617, Steel Challenge
You didn't mention whether or not your 617 was a ten shot model, perfect for steel challenge, although the 6 round cylinder gives you one extra shot, and the speedloaders are cheaper.
Another game not mentioned, falling plates. One local club running weekly falling plate matches found there was more demand for rimfire matches (the economy!) and they switch out to lighter plates, running about 3-1 rimfire vs centerfire. My club permits rimfire to shoot with the centerfire handguns at falling plate matches, we just watch carefully and count the hits. The .22 won't dependably knockover the full AR 500 plates.
and you can buy your own knockover plates from Gibson, good practice, good fun.

Silver Creek Conservation Club Sellersburg, Indiana. We shoot steel challenge every 4th saturday of each month. Smith & Wesson revolvers are welcome. The 10 shot 617 is a popular revolver choice.

My club in Maryland has several 22 revolver friendly monthly matches including Speed Steel, Rimfire Falling Steel, and a (bowling) Pin match. You just need to look around your area.
