Default 1911 holster

started shooting uspsa matches and found that my nice leather holster with retention strap is not the best. befor I buy a new one that is geared for comp weather another leather one or a kydex I thought I would be a great idea to see what all of my great brothers in arms prefer. I looked at the blade-tec black ice. I have the e-series commander bob tailed frame

I make my own holsters and I designed a holster meant for owb concealed carry. I don't have a real 1911 yet, I used a pot metal replica as a mold. It has retention molded in at the trigger guard and I decided to try dying the inside brown with a black exterior. I also had some new leather cutting and stitching techniques to try.

Suggest you read the holster section in the Single Stack and Production USPSA rules ( APpendices D4 and D5).
The other consideration is the wear on that nice blue gun from a bare kydex holster. I'd suggest a lined holster from Safariland for a legal "suitable for everyday use" holster that minimizes wear on the gun and allows a quick draw, like the Safariland 567-53 (568 for paddle). I've used one for a Colt Commander for years.

Look around at what the other shooters are using at your next match. Around here Kydex is the predominant holster material. Yes it will wear the finish, but so will leather. I have read about a lined Kydex holster, but forget who makes that holster. I use the Blade-Tech OWB model. Comp-Tac and ready tactical are also very popular models.

Not USPSA, but here is a link to the IDPA magazine, Tactical Journal. (Very slow to load - save it to your computer to save time) This edition lists all of the equipment used by the participants at the 2012 nationals. Blade-Tech and Comp-Tac made up approximately 90% of the holsters used at the match.
