Default What is the origin of term "Repair Center Target"?

Just curious, but I ordered some NRA B-8 targets the other day.

They are marked "25 YARD REPAIR CENTER".

I did a Google search for that term, and must have missed it if it is on the web.

Do any of ya'll know what the origin of 'Repair Center' is, or what it relates to?

Mods - feel free to move this thread, I wasn't sure where this would go.

Thanks in advance.

Rich

The "Repair Center" is the central portion of the target that, in theory, gets the most hits. Rather than replace the entire target, which can be a major PITA for such things as retractable frame rifle targets (what you see at Camp Perry, for example), you just paste on a repair center and are good to go.

Don't quote me on the exact dimensions, but a full B-8 target is 24" x 24" and has the scoring rings out to 5. The repair center version is 11" x 11", and covers only out a bit past the 8-ring. The reason is as JDBoardman stated above.

Technically, what you have is a B-8(C), the center portion of the target that's used in the timed and rapid fire stages of Bullseye competition at 25 yards. It includes the black "X", 10, and 9 rings (the black is about 5" diameter) and all of the white 8 ring, as well as most of the 7 ring and small portions of the 6 ring. As others have indicated, the idea is that most of the hits should be in the center of the target so it's easier and cheaper to just replace the center between stages. There are small index lines on the centers and on the main target that help to line up the replacement center correctly. Hits in the white - and it's a very good shooter indeed who doesn't have any - are covered with little adhesive pieces of paper called "pasters". The full B-8 target is 21" X 24".

Thanks all!

Very interesting and much appreciated. Being new to shooting I was wondering about this term.

Explanations make perfect sense.

Now, all I have to do is hit the black at 25 yards.

That is a problem a lot of us have. If you think 25 yards is tough, look at the 50 yard target.

Last year I had a memorable moment: scored 93 / 100 with 9 rounds in the black and one just outside the black at 50 yards. Next target was also at 50 yards and scored 53 / 100 with zero shots in the black .
