625 in ASI
This month’s ASI match I used my long neglected 625-8. I did reasonably well, coming in middle of the pack against optic equipped semi automatics.
Earlier in the week I changed main and trigger return springs using the Wilson Combat spring kit. Had no issues and the trigger pull is much improved. Was pleased with the gun’s performance though I failed on the last stage and bobbled a reload due to cold damp fingers/ hands :-)
I intend on shooting each one of my S&W revolvers in matches , have used my 627, 617, 63, 21-4, 24-3 previously. Need to get my pencil barreled M10 and M15 out soon too.
All in all a good day despite the cold rain.

Any range time with a revolver beats the alternative!

What is an ASI match? I shoot IDPA, ICORE and USPSA, don't know ASI.

ASI is a game similar to IDPA but more entry level. As an entry level action shooting game, there are no divisions, so I competed with all other guns. I shoot ASI in addition to IDPA as I figure more trigger time is always beneficial.
ASI = Action Shooting International.
I consider it a gateway to action pistol shooting sportslike IDPA/ uspsa.
https://asi-usa.org/
Rules are simple, allows virtually any pistol/ pistol caliber, no need for a lot of “kit” - just a gun, 1 mag or reloader, gun case. Don’t need a holster, shooter starts at low ready or with gun on a table. Most use holsters and drawing from holster on some stages is acceptable.
What I like most is I am able to shoot with my wife who can no longer tolerate a holstered gun on her belt due to previous surgeries. And she can shoot my Ruger MK II.
Many of my IDPA friends also shoot ASI - mostly for more trigger time, but also to shoot the guns outside the IDPA divisions- like 22s.

Shot my 625-8 again in this months match. Similar results, middle of the pack, but had a good time. All in all was a fun day.
Decided I’ll shoot this in our regional IDPA match this Apr.

Shooting all the S&W revolvers...That sounds like alot of fun! Congrats on a good shoot and remembering to have fun with it!
I like the idea of shooting different wheelguns and having fun with it. My S&W Victory revolver and 1917 could make for a long day, but...I'm not dedicated to winning at this point. I'm dedicated to improving every time and having fun. I'm already the best Steel Challenge revolver shooter up here. (That's a joke...I'm the only revolver shooter up here currently...lol)

I now mostly shoot my 625-8 and Shield 45. Both are accurate and fun, but for pure accuracy, the 625 is the clear winner. With moonclips, it's faster to reload than I ever would imagined....recall that my early police days were spent reloading with a 12-round loop loader, then finally speedloaders. The revolver reloading solution was 75 years old then, but I didn't know it.
Sigh.

Another fun day shooting my 625 in our monthly ASI match. 6 Stages were simple and relatively easy. Came in 30th out of 54 shooters with only 7 down. Believe I was the top revolver shooter, but still need to work at it.
All in all a fun day

ASI sounds interesting. I used to shoot IDPA quite regularly. But health issues have knocked me out of the game. Kinda hard to run and gun when you can't run anymore.
I think I'll suggest it to my local club.

Gee! I have a 625-2. I have moon clips. I have some ammo. I even have access (at least for a little while) to a proper range. ASI? Sounds like something a lot of folks might actually enjoy! After all ... any gun, caliber, etc. Would tend to eliminate some of the extreme gamesmanship and equip. racing and focus on fun shooting. Like it. Now, where to find ASI? Sincerely. bruce.
