The Company with the 4 initials always has some cool self resetting reactive targets for the rim-fires. I have several of these

And one of these

But they are not for center-fire

I do not use my metal center-fire targets for the 22s because of ricochet concerns. Even with the center-fire spinners

I just ordered a 16 inch diameter AR500 target,,

The larger the target, and the harder the material the louder the ring when the target is hit.

So, the 16" disc out of AR500 should make some noise!!

I am gonna mount it out at a distance that the centerfires will be going slow enough to not damage it,, (too much,, LOL!!)

Shooting Targets always has a nice selection of blem targets to get the order over $100,, so that I get free shipping.

I got to admit, the set I bought a year ago for rimfire still has the zinc plating on,, no rust at all.

Nope,, I use

ShootingTargets7 AR500 Targets ➡️ FREE Shipping @ $99

They are dirt cheap, and I really think they got high quality stuff,,

My 629 and the AR have not damaged anything ,, yet,,

AR500 and the armor plate they sell is REALLY hard steel,, it reacts real nice when hit.

I first found them on Amazon, but, have been ordering directly for the last two orders.

It is hard to spend much over $100 at a time,,
(I do the $100 minimum to get free shipping,,)

They have a "seconds" section where targets are as much as 70% discounted,, I always get a few of those,,

I would not have placed this second order, except I wanted that noisy GONG,, and some long range targets.

We use old circular saw blades for 22s. When you mount them through center hole make sure they have room to move. They make bigger ding that way to. Some guys tac weld old hinges to them for flip ups, others rig them up for swingers or spinners. We get blades 3” to 12” but mostly 7.5”
Makes respectable 50yd target for kids.

For handguns/rimfires, a dueling tree is the most fun steel target I own. I have a Birchwood Casey Handgun dueling tree, but plenty of companies make them. Good for either building up skills, or having a duel between two shooters to test their skills.

I’ve bought lots of steel targets off eBay. By far the best prices and sometimes you get free shipping despite the heavy weight. I like the ones that hang on T Post. You can get the hangers on eBay as well

Others have given you at least three companies that make/sell steel targets that they have done business with! Google them yourself, or do you want others to do all the work for you?

The Dueling Tree by Birchwood Casey is fun. The steel plates swing left/right when hit. It's fun practice for speed and accuracy especially when used in conjunction with a shot timer. I have one for centerfire pistol, but they also make one for rimfire. Pretty simple set-up/break-down, but they are a bit on the heavy side.

I specifically asked bald1 about eBay sellers he/they had done business with and have been satisfied with. That was why I was quoting him, as opposed to asking a general question on the thread. If somehow this offends you, that's a you problem, not a me problem.

Google doesn't help with vendor integrity or product quality inquiries on eBay.

I have a bunch of various sized and shaped AR500 targets that I got several years ago. They have held up really well (up to and including 30-06). Unfortunately, where I bought them (Wideners) no longer carries them.

I do have some advice from shooting things made of steel out in the desert for years.

Buy quality plates and keep an eye on them. Wear eye-pro. Chewed-up, divot-ed plates are more likely to throw stuff back at you. Nice flat plates are more predictable for where the fragments go.

Don't shoot your targets with a high powered rifle at less than 100 yrds. (assuming you want them to last).

When I needed portable hangers, I used t-posts with a method of hooking a 2x4 between them. I have hooks spaced on the 2x4 for the chains on the plates.

Dueling trees are a lot of fun. If you need them to handle any larger than .22lr they get expensive fast.

Wear eye pro.

what I read about cratering is that it is a velocity/spalling issue. Its the temp and friction at the point of impact. I forget the number, but its around 2800 fps. So rimfire won't do anything unless its thin and you are close. Then its just kenetic energy.

"That’s why a 5.56 Federal XM193 with a 55 grain bullet and muzzle velocity of about 3300 ft/s (from a 20” barrel) can put 66% more heat energy into the target than a .308 Federal Gold Medal with a 168 grain bullet and muzzle velocity of ‘only’ 2560 ft/s (again from a 20” barrel)."

I think they said beyond 100 yards for 223?

The pistol distance is more a ricochet issue than target damage. I found the info on a target manufacturers site.

this is why anti-armor artillery or tank rounds are a small, long narrow hard dart in a sabot. Its the 6000 degrees at the tip when it hits at super velocity that cuts through the armor. Same if they use a copper shapped charge to spit out a jet of liquid copper. Think back to the Civil War. Those massive, but slow cannon balls bouncing off iron shell plating. Were they a pound apiece with a tip, going rocket fast, they would have easily cut through.

Default How about Throoms?

Are you firm on getting metal targets? If not, take a look at Throom targets. They are a self-healing foam target available in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colors. Very safe, particularly with kids around. They don't "ping" like steel, but otherwise they're very cool. And you can make your own frames.
