Well, a two year old thread. I'll bet the original poster has long been gone!
In his great 1976 book, "The Practical Book of Knives" Ken Warner said something to the effect that whatever you buy, it'll have better steel than the knives the mountain men used to live off the land many moons ago.
I look a little askance at any 'best' thing, whether it's guns, knives, or cars. Mule Packer and others nailed it.
If you want something a cut above (huh?!? huh!?!), you can get a good maker like Tim Britton to make you something that won't break the bank, but you won't see one every time you turn around (timbritton.com). I went to buy one, and bought three because I'm not the sharpest knife (I'm on a roll!)in the drawer.
The one I originally had made was this Trapper - I was a little leery of mother-of-pearl, but it has really grown on me. With it's changing hues in different light, one picture doesn't tell the whole story, but it's all I have:

Randall Made Knives and Arizona Custom Knives
The original Randall Made Knives are handmade and no two are alike. They are the best knives in the world -but - I think they only make one type of folding knife.
Arizona Custom Knives have a wide array of upper class knives, some running up to $3,775 in price. Check them out first. They have an interactive knife finder based on cost, features, designs, steel, etc., that will narrow down your ultimate choice.
A. G. Russel Knives is another shop that sells all high quality makes.

Never, ever not have my Swiss Army knife in my pocket. My Dad gave me one when I left for Viet Nam. I'm on my third now. I like Ken Onion knives. When I go out I will clip on a Kershaw Leak in black.

Personally, my favorite knife I own is a Spyderco Tenacious. I like the "hole" better than studs or flippers, but that's just me. Just a good, solid well priced knife.
If I need something bigger, I have some larger S&W and Gerber folders, but the Tenacious is still pretty balanced and versatile for most tasks.

Lots of decent knives out there, just remember that "quality" is subjective. What is quality to one person may be real **** to me and someone else. Just my opinion but I've always been partial to Buck, especially the older ones before they started being made offshore, some of them anyway. Gerber, in my opinion is not what they used to be, a lot of them are made in China now, same with Schrade. Even Puma has a line not made in Germany. I have some older Buck knives from the 70's that have been long discontinued and are now selling for hundreds of $$ on ebay.
As someone mentioned earlier, Case makes a great knife and they are made in the US.
Like a lot of other industries, buyer beware!!

I have lots of old trappers, especially Schrades and Cases, but I don't carry them anymore. Pocket clip and single handed opening or it stays in a drawer. For heavier home use I am not without my Kershaw Work Knife, linked below. Love the straight horridly sharp and easy to keep that way blade. For lighter EDC at work etc., it's a Kershaw Leek. I don't know how many of them I've bought. Wife and all the kids have and love them. There is a definite point of diminishing returns on knife prices, especially for knives you plan to carry and use.

I went through many pocket knives before I settled on a Chris Reeve Model 21 Sebenza. Although it is fairly large (I have the large model but there is also a smaller model as well), I carry it every day in the pocket of my jeans and love it. It was very pricey for me but has proven to be well worth it. I have used it to clean elk, deer and antelope along with fish and every day usage. The factory will resharpen it when necessary. It is made of S35VN steel and holds an edge for a long time if not abused. There are many great knives out there and most are not this expensive but for me it is a winner.

I had Mike "Tank" Fisher, a Texas knifemaker make me what I wanted. Wish I could post a picture, but do a Google search, and find his work.
Mine is a lock blade, automatic version of a single blade trapper. Totally custom and hand made, elk stag scales. But he will make whatever you want and is a heck of a guy and easy to work with.
For all day everyday use, German Eye, CV steel Case knives, and Boker Tree brand are hard to beat.
