Default Two S&W knives from the past

I just finished cleaning up the second of two Smith and Wesson knives from the late 70's/early 80's that I got off ebay this week. The one on top is a Model 6061 Maverick and the one on the bottom is a Model 6064 Ultra-Thin. The Maverick has some minor signs of use but the Ultra-Thin looks like it was never touched (the box has seen better days though). They're both stainless steel and made in the US unlike a lot of the Chinese-made ones available today.

I was lucky to get these both for $20. I saw two other Mavericks that were in brand-new condition going for about $50. I haven't seen any other Ultra-Thins on ebay but I saw one listed as like new on Armslist going for $45.

There is a book currently on ebay you guys may be interested in, “the knives of Smith & Wesson”. Seller will not post to Australia so I won’t be bidding. Good luck.

They look a lot like Browning knives. I picked up a Browning knife at a flea market once for 10 bucks and it turned out to be one of my best knives. That was back when I could get case knife seconds for ten bucks, when Jim Parker owned the company and was experiencing around with some different materials at the time.

What a joke. That was a style popular in WW2 because they were so quick and easy to stamp out. There was not a lot of labor involved in them. They used them for a paratrooper knife because they could be opened with one hand if they were hung up in a tree. The German paratrooper knives were just the opposite. They made them more difficult to open so when their soldiers got drunk they could not stab each other. They made a a china repo of that knife. Then they ruined them by putting some sort of a Nazi symbol on them. The collectors would pay a lot but Ebay decided that it was a hate crime to sell Nazi collectibles. I was going to have the symbol ground off and keep selling them but I never got around to it. I was just to busy at the time.

D. Binx:

Thanks for posting those pictures. I have one of the model 6061 in my pocket right now that I have begun carrying after 40 years in a drawer. Never knew the model number until I saw your post. Thank you for that. I mentioned this knife in another topic about knife sharpening. Never carried it because I could not sharpen it. Got a Work Sharp for Christmas and it is now like a razor. Our department armorer and range master gave me this knife. He was a life long friend who has passed. I am proud to carry this knife in his memory and now very happy to know its nomenclature.

I have the 6064 ultra thin in my pocket as I type this response. I have no idea when or where I got it, but found it in a box that was stored in the attic a couple of years ago. I sharpened the blade and carry it most generally everyday...
