Default S&W Project-A-Flame (Signal Kit)

Found this at OGCA today and couldn't pass it up. I am not sure if I have ever seen one before. This kit appears to be complete, "Unfired" and in almost perfect condition. The rubber case is still soft and pliable.

I have seen the N-frame based Flare-Gun as well as some of the other equipment that came from the Jefferson Ohio facility, but I don't think I have seen one like this. It fires similarly to a pen gun. I assume it was intended for small civilian boats.

I wonder if the flairs would still fire properly...

Just like new! In my career I've only seen one like that, and I'm not sure it was S&W, but we fired it to see how it worked, and I would not like have to hope that another boat could see it farther than I could be heard shouting!
Sort of like bear hunting with a zip gun.

They must be rare in that condition. Nice find, indeed.

These were vendor made and a very similar kit was sold by Colt. I sold one to a S&W collector friend of mine who placed it in his shirt pocket and forgot it was there. He went to his new motor home RV that evening, took off his shirt and the flare gun fell out, hit the floor of the bedroom and went off. It set the carpet on fire and my friend had to ruin his new $50 cowboy shirt smothering the fire. Then he had to spend a lot more replacing the carpet and getting the smell of burned plastic out of the RV ! Ed.
