Presentation Boxes
I know this has been asked before but ....Trying to be fair to the seller. I bought a pair of presentation boxes yesterday with tools for a ridiculous price. Really low at 5 dollars apiece. Bought a load of shooting reloading items from him and since he is a friend I want to pay him at least half what they are worth or thereabout. They are both in good condition externally with some loss of flocking and a little tear on the longer one where the cylinder fits. One has an unopened tool kit and the other has no bag but am certain it is un-used. Can some one give me an approximate value so I can ease my guilt? Oh both are for N frames one a 4 inch and one looks to be 8 3/8 inch. Also got a nice set of N frame targets and a set of wood and pachmayr N frame targets . Only time I ever saw a set like them was on a 3 inch 41 mag Lew Horton gun. Added a couple of pics. Not great ones like some of the guys do.

At the recent S&WCA annual Symposium in Baton Rouge, cases like this were flying off the sales tables at $150 -$200 range. I'll give you $100 ea and you can split it with your friend! ED.

Thanks for the reply. I think I will definitely keep the long one as that 29-2 Pimp gun fits it just right. I guess I will just giv the fellow another 90 bucks and I'll consider that a fair price. Thanks for the offer.

Good information. I just picked up a 1978-1982 box for a 4 inch on EBAY for $200. I didn't know if I had paid too much or too little. I guess I paid just right.

Saw the fellow yesterday and he didn't want to take the money. But he did accept another 40 bucks.... so then I felt obligated to buy some more reloading stuff from him. Did get about 500 38 sp once fired brass and maybe 200 357. Also got about 40-50 partial boxes of jacketed bullets. Oh Boy. Now he wants to sell me some old guns ...no not S&Ws. Makarov CZ an OLD Russian SKS
How do you tell when the boxes were made? I have another 4 inch N frame box that has a different material for the gun cutout(Styrofoam) with a maroon cloth cover. Cloth is coming loose.

Most S&W presentation boxes were made by vendors with purchase orders from S&W, so materials change from time to time, plus a gun can be shipped in a box from storage that was made 10+ yrs before the gun. Estimates of box age can only be estimates in most cases. Ed.

That is good to know. The box for the pimp gun is in nice condition...but it needs the blue cloth?? replaced. took the whole thing to a gun show today and a fellow offered me 50 for the unopened tools. when I turned the offer down..he upped it to 60. good grief!

Member jcelect is the local Presentation case expert and can let you know about age and relining the interiors.
Buying the seller a nice lunch (or two) may allow him to accept more money gracefully.

I had him re-do a box I have for an earlier 4 inch 57. Will probably do so for this one too. Beautiful work.. As far as the fellow I bought the boxes from he's good to go.. I bought all his partial(and some full) boxes of bullets. I just couldn't use all the brass he has. But I bought what I could use to help him clean the stuff out. I even bought an RCBS lead melting furnace that I didn't need...but it was full of Lyman #2. LOL and a whole load of hard lead nuclear medicine shipping containers..About 200 lbs or so. Hard stuff.
