Default Do you remember your first, really?

ZIPPO lighter, that is.

Well, this is my first.

I remember back in the 60's family members coming home from the service, (mostly Navy), and they had the neatest ZIPPO lighters with the coolest designs. Many were NOT appropriate for children.

A kindly gentleman gifted this to me and it is the first ZIPPO lighter I have ever owned.

It is a wonderful little tool and, of course, a quality item made right here in the good ol' USA.

Again, thank you sir. You know who you are.

Enjoy,

bdGreen

Yep. One of those basic, but well constructed little beauties that just work. And for not much $, either. Smoker or not, having fire on demand in the pocket of your pants can come in handy.

I had a giant Zippo. Had to be maybe 6” high? Some promotional thing. Should have kept it, the only giant thing I have left is a guitar pick.

Bought the D-Day Commemorative with the black crackle finish back in 94. Came in a gold round tin which is attractive. Yep I used it and probably should not have. LOL

I still have my WW2/Korea black crinkled finish Zippo I carried thru both wars and it still works like new. I didn't smoke but it came in handy to light your hand warmers . The Army gave you free cigarettes, which I traded for canned peaches from the ration boxes.

I owned several Zippo's back when I smoked a pipe. Even before that as a kid, it seemed every male I knew had one. I used to love that SNAP...flick...voosh...CLICK sound they made. An experienced guy could make it in what seemed to be one motion. I remember playing with them just to hear that snap, click...snap, click over and over. Oh...and that wonderful smell when you closed it and then opened it again.

I think there is still a Dale Earnhardt #3 one around here somewhere that my ex-MIL gave me one Christmas.

Neat. I've been in the factory where they make them in Pennsylvania. Case knives own them and the knife factory (and factory store) is right next door.

I've owned several of them over the years. Even learned the snap open and light tricks. But grew tired of them leaking in my pocket. When BIC came out with the disposables, I changed and never looked back.
I've still got a couple of Zippos around here somewhere.

Default From my Dad......

He left these and I ended up with them without even knowing it. He probably quit smoking 50 years before he passed. I didn't look at the ones that aren't Zippos but there are several of the genuine article there.

Not a zippo, but a 1922 Ansonia Watch Ash Tray with a matchbox holder.

I got this lighter for being in my little sister’s wedding when she married my best friend back in ‘82. I did have another smaller one before this one but I gave it away so this is my only Zippo lighter. I don’t like getting Zippo leg plus I quit smoking tobacco. That key ring I got when I worked in the coke plant at J&L Steel for some kind of record we got in ‘78 on the new A5 coke battery.
Best I can come up with. Those Zippos leaked fluid sometimes in the pocket and burned the skin.

I had a couple back in the 60's and 70's, but as usual for them, they would leak if the went upside down (or even sideways) in my pocket. Like Greyfox, I went with Bics as soon as they came to market. Found this black anodized one at an out of town gas station a few years ago, for $5.00... ! Used it a couple of times, otherwise it sits on my desk for the nostalgia.

And how about when you overdid it refueling, so that when you lit it up — whoosh! — the entire surface of the lighter was immediately aflame, so you'd snap it closed and start waving your hand wildly through the air hoping the flames would go out while reassuring your date with suave aplomb that nothing was amiss?!

This one isn't a Zippo but I got it from my father. Who never really used it. He worked in the Bureau of Budget from '61 to '65.

IMG_0868.jpg

Always thought it interesting to have, considering their future history.

This thread got me to looking around, for preferably an older one. Found this on EBay. Seller wrote they "couldn't read the engraved name" on the reverse but I could and it sounded familiar - I'm guessing others here may know the name too. Last name for sure.

IMG_0871.jpg

IMG_0872.jpg

The top had separated from the bottom, repaired that. The flint was deteriorated inside its hole and I had to clean it out. No flint spring or screw, grabbed them at a local store. Wick was fine.

I looked around to see if it was a general issue or commemorative type, found nothing.

I know using a Zippo for cigars isn't best but will use it once in a while.

For sure indeed...I've written extensively of Gen. Robin Olds, the Captain's older brother...Thanks for the link, it provides further insight into the family......Ben

That was less of a problem when, as a generally broke enlisted man, I filled up my Zippo from the overflow vent tubes of parked F-4's on the flight line...JP-4 was a lot harder to set aflame than Ronsonol, but it was a little cheaper to occasionally buy a package of five flints in the BX than a can of lighter fluid...Yes I smoked way too much back then, but I quit 46 years ago and haven't touched them since......Ben

Yes I do!
I had a pipe lighter. It was cylindrical shaped. You pulled it apart to get it to light, then the fire appeared in the middle.
One day me and a friend climbed a water tower and had a "smoke".
Something in that smoke made me forget that lighter up there on that water tower.
It looked like this:

I had a couple of those back in my pipe smoking days. They were about perfect for that task. Just like a Zippo, there was a "trick" to snapping it open to get a flame right away. Snap...voosh...snap... Impressed the heck out of some people. But as others have said, a Bic was a lot more practical, and worked at least as well, if not better.

And YES! That blue/yellow flame around your hand was pretty impressive itself.
