Default S&W 78G Pellet Pistol

Gun show find... very excited about this one... consignment on a table at a gunshow.. guy sells AK's & Mauser Broomhandles... selling for a friend.. I think I did ok price wise.. will find out if it needs new seals etc... complete including warranty card.. have always wanted a model 41, but this will do for quite a while...
let me know if you have one and if there are any things that I might need to know...and if you have an any idea on value that would be helpful as well...

there is no place to put this so if it needs to move that's fine.

UPDATE.. just found out they are serialized... read they made about 172,000...
this serial number is under 1,000... definitely an early one... so cool.

That one looks nice. I saw one in a pawn shop last week for $175...gun only. I asked some questions about it on here.

S&W 78G

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to go back to the shop before I left town. I'll be back there in a few weeks so if I get a chance I'll see if it's still there.

Your is a very nice complete example. I have both the S&W 78G & 79G they are great pistols. When the market is good ones like yours sell for $300.00 on E-bay.
Great shooters I shoot mine in my basement weekly

dont use them, keep the set complete. Buy pellets and CO@ at Walmart. The stuff that came with the pistol has collector value. Just shot my 78G last night, very accurate pistol.

I had a .177 cal as a boy and now have a .22 cal. It does shoot but leaks down fairly quickly. Anyone have a contact for service work? They are great pistols.

I have the same concerns about my 78G.. but no first hanf knowledge.. my research has shown 2 places.. one has some rather nasty and wonderful reviews and may or may not still be in business.. the other is this one:

Smith & Wesson 78G and 79G Seal Kits - Baker Airguns

They sell parts and have a service department... I am leaning towards Baker.

I had one years ago that leaked down. The problem was a small pin hole in the grip frame casting.
I patched it up and unfortunately sold it years later.
I’d like to find a Beeman Tempest for a reasonable price.

That's a nice example of an early pistol complete with the paperwork it should have. (The pink barrel wrap is the most frequently missing item.) One of the reasons shooters like the early ones is the adjustable trigger. The black paint on these early pistols chips very easily, so be careful with it! Later in the run they switched to a much stronger finish that looks more like a powder coat.

Resealing these is not difficult, and kits range from about $12 up to $45. Of course you do get what you pay for! If you pay to have it rebuilt, figure $100 or so for parts, labor, and shipping. If you try it yourself, be careful! That finish could get chipped, and I've seen quite a few of these with a chewed up sleeve retaining screws and scraped up muzzles. (That retaining screw is the one that's visible below the barrel.)

I'd really consider what you want to do with this one. It appears to be a really clean example that may be best left alone as a collector's piece. It's pretty easy to find one in shooter condition if you keep an eye on the auction sites.
