"The Hostiles" 1 of 1500 ?

Anyone else seen these ?

I see mention of it in the "Standard Catalog of S&W" 3rd Ed p377 . It's a framed set consisting of the brass belt buckle , ornate Buck knife and The Hostiles print poster in what I think is a walnut frame . Comes with a certificate stating 1 of 1500 . Circa 1983 . Anyone have one ?

I have owned several.
Last year, or year before, I donated a set for the auction at the annual SWCA meeting. Uncle Ed bought it, so see if he'll post a pic for ya.

Thank you Lee . I tried a few internet searches and came up with zip . Evidently they don't turn up very often . The S&W book listed them at $850 . Does that sound about right based on your experiences ?

I had no idea they were valued that high.
Ed bought the set I donated for 320. He commented they sold in the 500+ range in Ca. I had never seen them sell that high, but had not had a set in several years.
I should have run it on ebay.

Here's the set. The buckle is a gold and rhodium version of the one commonly available in brass. The print is numbered. The knife is a S&W Maverick that was designed by Ferraro and built at the Houlton, Maine plant. The blade is 440 stainless acid etched with the Hostiles scene and plated with 14 karat gold. The handle inlays are rosewood. The frame is walnut, as you mentioned, and the velour is a very deep blue.

It's a pretty nice set and I enjoy mine. That pic sits right behind my computer so I see it every time I sit down to waste time on this silly machine.

The $850 price was in "the book" . I've never seen one for sale at any price .

I have one also . Mine was a gift given to me over 25 yrs ago . Mine's not for sale

I have a full copy of this - it is number 659 in the series of 1500. Comes with the belt buckle, knife, print and is framed (just like the picture above). My dad received it as a gift years ago and he is not really a collector. I am going to sell it on eBay, but as I was looking for information, I found this thread. I figured I would see if anyone was interested before I put it on eBay. I can send pictures and whatnot. E-mail [email protected] and let me know if interested. My name is Matt. I'll wait until the 24th of January before I go ahead with posting on eBay. I was planning to set a reserve price on eBay of $320 based on this thread and would sell for same here, plus some additional for shipping. Thank you!
 
A friend and long time S&W collector has one of these # 796. I found this old thread and wanted to see if these are ever offered for sale or readily available. Any information would be appreciated.

They show up on ebay occasionally. In recent months they have gone for $350 to $400.
When nobody was looking, I snagged #302 on ebay for $167.51 two years ago :)

I may, or may not, still have the one I bought (a generous donation by Lee ) at the Sturbridge, MA., Symposium auction in 2008. ( #756 0f 1000) I paid, $320. It was a donation to the Assoc., however the item was worth the money. I flew there and so had to have Staples box & ship the item, and they promptly broke the glass, but paid for a replacement, so it was as good as new. A brief search doesn't locate it, and I vaguely recall selling it at a later Symposium. In filing a claim at Staples, I used several Ebay sales at the time. Top Ebay bid was $505 and did not meet reserve. They are a nice item and not real common. I would estimate a value range today as between $400 to $550 range. I've had several of these over time, always figured they were in the value range I cited and when I could get them cheaper, I usually later found a buyer at a profit. The history of these is that in 1983, S&W commissioned artist Dan Smith to make a print of the watercolor original painted in 1902. The prints and the buckle & knife all have the same serial number between 1 and 1500. The buckle & knife ( A Maverick model ) are gold plated. Ed.

Are you sure it was Dan Smith. The Dan Smith I know painted the original in 1902. In 1983 he would have been north of 100. I'm probably wrong.
 
Don, I had concerns about the same thing, however the info. about Dan Smith came from the brochure that advertised the item for sale. Quote : " A limited edition print/knife.buckle assemblage produced in very limited quantities by Smith & Wesson. S&W commissioned artist Dan Smith to complete a print,,,etc, " I think the brochure was probably a misprint and meant to say that Dan Smith was he original artist, etc. Ed.
