I'm still wanting to pick up a "Hostile" and "Last Cartridge" poster but I can't seem to save anough money for them.

What with all of this leather and ammo and other things I gotta pay for.

I finally got a copy of "The Hostile" and "The Last Cartridge" thanks to our good friend R Crabtree.

He saw them on ebay, remembered my post about them and purchased them for me (since I don't use paypal) and sent them my way. I then "reimbursed" him for them and they are now awaiting a couple of frames.

And an empty wall to hang them on.

It's good to have good friends. Congrats on getting the posters.

That's just it! We're not "friends" at all. We are complete and total strangers. He just saw my post on here about "The Hostile" and my desire to own one. He was on ebay one day, saw it at a very affordable price and sent me a PM about it.

I looked into it and discovered that "A" it was a very affordable price, "B" the seller also had "The Last Cartridge" at an affordable price as well. And then the bad news...they only took paypal. Which i do not use.

I asked him if he would be willing to buy them and I would send him the money, but instead, he just had the seller send them to me for my approval and then he trusted me enough to send him the funds.

What a guy!

Just out of curiosity, what is the price RANGE on the first two posters (The Hostile and The Last Cartridge)? I know it depends on condition and all that, but for a very good copy? And about when were they originally released?

Honestly, I've seen both of these prints sell for less than $5 and even as much as $50. I got lucky. I had another set of eyes (R Crabtree) watching for me and he spotted my two for less than 5 bucks each! Both posters with the shipping was around $17. Both of them were in absolute pristine condition. I couldn't be more pleased!

I still haven't framed them and put them up yet. My oldest daughter will be getting married (suppossedly in February 2010) and then, I'm gonna turn her bedroom into my Smith & Wesson/nekkid room.

The Last Cartridge was released in September of 1902 and Hostiles in March of 1903. Both originals were done by Dan Smith.

I have those posters rolled up in a tube...no idea they were collectible what are they worth? I need to go check and see if there is a dead cub on the log...

OIops forgot to say mine are prints...I think I got them when I was buying the belt buckles 30 years or so ago....

Man those old posters are great.

S&W actually commissioned 12 paintings to be made. These are the same images that appear on the sideplates of the 12 Revolver series. The original artwork was done by G.W. Peters, Dan Smith and Frederic Remington. S&W sold a 14" x 15" reproduction of these works of art by sending in 10 cents silver. You still find copies of these prints in old magazines like Pearsons, Munseys, Town & Country, Colliers and others.

An original poster from 1902 or 1903 will fetch upwards of $500. Several of these were reprinted over the years such as the Last Cartridge or Hostile. The ones printed for the 75th anniversary or the Centennial in 1952 are usually worth around $200. The ones like those above were done during the Bangor Punta years and usually sell for $25 or less.

The original series in 1902-03 were done in two sizes. The 12 revolver series did not reproduce all of the original series. If I remember, they used two or three other scenes not from the original series.
"The Hostiles" was reproduced in the early 1930's with the banner "SMITH & WESSON REVOLVERS" on the top and bottom.
They were done in english, spanish and portugese.
I hate to step on my good friend JSR II's toes, but if you find an original 1902 print for $500.00, buy it. They sell for $1000.00 or more. I have all 12 of the prints. I was lucky enough to buy 10 of them from an original owner that had them in a drawer and never had them in the light.
It took about 10 years to get a mint The Last Cartridge to replace the water stained copy I had.

I asked the gun shop clerk if I buy a safe can I have the SW MP poster and he said yes.

No they are not. Both are 1980's prints. The HOSTILES 1950's edition was a lot more vibrant and it doesn't say "A copy of a Dan Smith original"
The original 1902 "The Last Cartridge" has a dead baby bear at the feet of the man. It also doesn't say, "A copy of a Dan Smith Original".

I know someone that has The Hostiles print but it does not say Copy of a Dan Smith original. It says printed by Smith & Wesson on the bottom. I assume this is from the 1950s batch. What would be its value? I had one earlier with the wording written in Portuguese and I sold it on ebay for around $400. I put it on this forum somewhere. that was a couple of years ago.

They did one in the 1970's as well. The colors are a little duller than the 1950's edition. The logo one done in the 1930's reads "For over 75 years...."
The one that reads A copy of a Dan Smith original was done in the 1980's.

My father worked for Smith and Wesson in the 70's and 80's. He always had this picture up, and I thought nothing of it until he recently passed away.

I took a closer look, did a little research. It has the stamp. It looks just like the pictures I saw that were legit.

I do not trust people and have only shared this poster with one person.

How do I know? I gave up my job to take care of both parents, and I don't have much money. I don't want to deal with fraudulent people.

Any advice would be much appreciated...

Reviving an old thread.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to see the 12 prints?

I won a older The Hostiles framed print at the SWCA symposium and might consider buying another print in the group.

I'd love to find a copy of ``Last Cartridge``. I have the buckle and the Model 57.

I have all 12 of the 1902/1903 prints plus the advertising broadsheet announcing the 12 prints. I displayed them at the SWCA Annual in Springfield. I named the display "For 10 cents silver". I bought 10 of the 12 from Ray Riling in Philadelphia back the early 1980's. They were in mint condition. I had the other two already. I also bought an 1876 Smith & Wesson catalog from him. It's the only one I've ever seen. Today, any one of the 12 print in excellent condition will start at $1000.00 or more.

Be careful. The reprint they did in the 1980's eliminated the dead bear cub. If the want to see what all 12 looked like, get a copy of Smith and Wesson 1857-1945. They are pictured in it.
