Too bad about your bad experience with the S&W shotgun but, don't judge them all by the 916. That was a less than stellar effort that could trace it's roots back to the old Noble Company. S&W in their rush to pick up some more police business brought the already outdated single action bar design to market. As was mentioned here earlier they had to force dealers and departments to buy them by holding back the high demand revolvers and eventually bought alot of the police shotguns back. They more than made up for their mistake when they brought out the Japanese made model 3000 but as you know the damage to S&W shotguns reputation had been done. I've had my 3000 since 1984 and in that time I've come to the conclusion that it is a better shotgun than the Big R's 870. That's my opinion anyway.

Smile My first shotgun bought 2/14/12

Over the last few weeks i have picked up some new toys but the one thing that was lacking..... I not only had no shotgun but i had never even shot one.... lol well that all changed on feb 14th... i was at a local shop and had decided i wanted to try trap shooting so me and the owner talked for a bit and i ended up getting an old model 1000m 12 gauge 3" magnum for what i think is a decent price $250 out the door so i grabbed a box of shells and ran over to the range and WOW it was love at first Shot This gun is mean and VERY accurate.... The only thing i messed up on was i got 2 3/4" shells and they wont cycle so in a few hours i am going to get the right shells and see how she cycles

One question is there any one who can tell me the production date??
serial is FS60xxx

I will update with a range report later today if i can find a pussy pad.... with a rebuilt shoulder the kick is mean

If your asking who owns older S&W long guns, I own a Revolving Rifle serial number 1 and a Wesson Shotgun, don't remember that serial number.
I have had Model 1000's and 3000's.

I picked up a Excellent condition Model 1000 on GunBroker, I knew that they had issues with the Piston shock absorber. And as expected it was in much need of help, So after a couple hours of cleaning , I replaced the Piston shock absorber with a Rubber hose washer that I trimmed down to size. I mainly use it to shoot trap, since I cant bring myself to hunt with it, due to its condition. I probably shot around 2000+ shells (mainly 1oz reloads) through it without any issues. Attached are a couple of quick pictures.

I have a Model 1000 20 gauge that I got for my birthday when I was in the 6th grade. Unfortunately, the box is long gone, but the shotgun still shoots and looks like it did the day I got it, and I'll be 46 on my next birthday.

I've got a folding stock 3000 that I like a lot, but I am thinking about selling it. I know very little about its value, and am also not sure how to transfer it if I do sell it through this site.

I've had the shotgun for 10 or 12 years. Bought it lightly-used from a gun store here locally. It was only intended to be used as a home defense weapon, so I've only shot it enough to rotate old ammo out of inventory and, thankfully, have never even had to handle it in its intended capacity. I doubt if I've pumped 200 rounds through it in all the time I've had it.

I know this is not the sales area, and this is not intended as a sale announcement post. But if anyone who knows could pass on some info about how to valuate it, I hope that would be OK here. In any case, here's some pics:

Ejection-port side bluing still looks almost new:

Left side has gotten a few minor scratches. Not positive, but I think they're from removing and replacing the weapon in my safe, and maybe rubbing up against another rifle or something. It's possible that they've been there all along since I bought it. I really only wanted/needed a working shotgun. Didn't pay any attention to anything but did the action feel solid etc. Anyway....

I subscribed to this thread so I'll be notified if anyone posts some info for me. Would really appreciate it. Take Care,

Blues

I've had a S&W 1500,270 bolt action for 20 + years. Love it,have harvested many deer with it.I was cleaning it tonight and noticed the number 390 under the bolt handle, for lack of better gun terms. Was wondering is that the number of the rifle made that year??

Old thread but I can't resist, I inherited my dad's Husky made S&W 1640, I was just a kid but with him when he bought it new at the mall liquor store circa '66.

The 1640s are fine weapons ... small ring mausers of the "improved" pattern. Craftsmanship is superb, their only flaw is a hard trigger on the order of about 8 lbs. I shot my first deer and my best deer with that rifle. They were the "mountain rifles" of their day. Pretty lightweight with slender barrels, bottom metal of aluminum and stocks with just enough wood to be comfy. I can't imagine what it would it would take to make me part with mine.

My brother-in-law has a 1500 in .243 that he's had for decades and, so far as I know, never shot. Ten years or so back, there was a recall on Howa 1500s, something to do with the safety. Does anybody know if that's an issue with 1970s-vintage S&W 1500s?

I had a S&W 1000 just like the one about three posts before mine. The stock got damaged during a move but I found a replacement at Gun Parts (Numrich). It looked nice. It was an OK gun. The gas system was quite different then the other systems around at the time. It used WinChokes stamped S&W. It would choke on light loads though and stove pipe shells. I used it for Pheasant hunting once in a while and trap. One of my co workers bought it off of me because he liked it a lot. He shot his first pheasant in over 20 some years with it over my dog. It was made by Howa in Japan. Imagine that, it was made by people that are forbidden to own such a gun. I think I have some spare parts left for it and I know my co worker still has the gun.

I have a 916A. My father-inlaw gave it to me. I think he paid $100 for it and a older remington 22. I have found out that there are alot of problems with this shotgun. I do not shoot it very often(only one outting now that I think about it) but it seemed to shoot very well. It has the 18.5" barrel, a 5 shot tube and had a good spread pattern to it. Is there a place where you can put the serial number in and find out history of the gun?

My model 1000 12ga now sits in my bedroom loaded with 00 buck. It served me through almost 4 decades of bird and rabbit hunting with never a ftf or feed problem. After removing the restriction pin the magazine now holds 3 shells instead of 2. I guess I got a good one, It outlasted my knees!

I bought a 1000P (1st couple of year production of the 3000 was marked 1000P) back in the 70's. Used it for everything for a number of years and never had any issues with it.
