OK, I know you are Smith guys, but would welcome an opinion from any of you on the Savage 110BA vs the Steyr Elite for long range target shooting. Your opinions and ideas appreciated.

I'm not familar with those particular models, but I have to vote for the Savage. My uncle first told me about how accurate Savages were, he's a sniper for a Sheriffs office and he uses a heavy barrel Savage. I believe his is a 10FP. The only Savage I have is a cheap Stevens model, but it can shoot 3/4 inch groups at a 100 yrds. They have a Savage forum that has been very helpful to me.

we have gotten 2 of the Savage in 30-06 in the last 2 years. My son's rifle has got a regular trigger, my GF's rifle got the Accutrigger. Her rifle is maybe too much for her, but the trigger is so good it lets her shoot before the flinch.... so it's pretty accurate in her hands. I get MOA and better with it with 165gr ammo- usually Winchester XPII, and Federal Nosler Ballistic tips. Now, my son's rifle the trigger is still in need of more break-in shooting. He's already put about 80-100 thru it. He can shoot 3/4 MOA at 200yds. It's wicked accurate, with the decent but not extravagant scope it came with. This spring, in Tx, we were hog hunting at night. He put 2 down in 2 nights; both head shots. With NO NV scope; just moonlight. I asked him where he was aiming, and he said "Right where I shot it." The first was 120 yds, the second was 40 yds.
The Savage is truly as accurate as they advertise. Just get the accutrigger model; I feel it is well worth the extra $40-60.

A lot of my military service and much of my subsequent LE experience has been with long range rifles. Steyr makes an excellent weapon. However if there is one area (aside from the lever/pump gun) where the US is at the top of the list, it is in accurate bolt guns. Remington, Winchester (the real Winchester), Savage/Stevens, and the variations built usually on the Remington action are second to none-and I really mean to none. Somone like Anschtuz, Steyr,Sig, Mauser, et al, can produce a rifle just as accurate, but usually at four times the price, and at NO increase in performance.
Given the choice I will take a US built bolt rifle anytime. My first "high power" rifle was an old Savage bolt gun in 30-30. I still have it and it still is a contender when the range is within its caliber limitations, and I do my part.
