Mossy 500 12 ga. w/20" barrel, full length mag tube, surefire light with pigtail pressure pad, six shot side saddle shell holder, single point sling attachment point and all black furniture with steady grip rear stock. I learned something interesting a few years back. My Mossy is chambered for 3" or shorter shells. The mag tube will hold six 3", seven 2-3/4" or, if you can find them EIGHT 2-1/2" shells. I have my grandfathers Begium made double 12 gauge. It sports 32" damascus barrels with 2-1/2" chambers. Not wanting to wear the barrels in my forehead I had one of the local gun shops order me a case of 2-1/2" low pressure #7's. While looking through the catalog I saw that Westley Richards offered 6's, 7's & 8's in 2-1/2" low pressure shells. My Mossy HD magazine is now loaded with two rounds of #7 2-1/2" + six rounds of federal #4 buck. And if the "Fit Hits the Shan" BIG TIME On the other side of the bed I've got the Mini Tec 9 with four 32 rounders in two jungle clips. She's not real accurate but she sure can spit out a lot of lead bees to try and sting someone in a real bad way.

Bedroom gun is a blued Ithaca 87 DS Police Special with the long mag tube and 8-shot capacity. Standard wood buttstock and slide handle. Loaded with express-strength #2 BIRDshot rounds.
On the first floor there's an Ithaca 37 Military and Police 8-shot with parkerized finish, ex-PA State Police issue. Again, loaded with #2 birdshot.
In the basement is another Ithaca 37 with standard length mag, loaded with #2 birdshot, a cut-down 18.5" Browning A5 with #2 birdshot, and an 18.5" Remington 11 with #2 birdshot.

+1 on your choice of the venerable Ithaca 37! Why did you choose birdshot?
(As for under my bed, nothing but dust-bunnies...if I need something for a burglar, I don't want to fight with them too!)

My old Ithaca 51 3" magnum - barrel shortened to 22"
It is illegal to keep it unlocked and loaded in my state so it sits in a locked cabinet in my closet with a butt-cuff full of buckshot and the bolt open.
I keep the key on the bedside table with my maglight so I feel I can get it deployed quick enough.

I'm curious as to where one would buy a shottie previously owned by SAPD. I would love to obtain a previous LE shotgun. Thanks

Old School--
Remington Model 11, 12ga Police Special. Circa 1925, shorter buttstock, 20" cylinder bore and parkerized.
Classic "car gun" of the motorized bandit era.

I normally use an M-16A1 clone for home defense. Oftentimes over the weekend I have my Ithaca 87 Deerslayer 20" stoked with #4 buck leaning against the safe. On the rare occasion it's out during the work week It's loaded with Winchester full power 2 3/4" 1 oz. foster slugs. I keep the Ithaca with three in the tube, hammer dropped/chamber empty, safety off. I keep a couple rounds to top it off next to the gun.
I have an 870 Express 20" 8 shot with a side saddle and a Knoxx Spec Ops stock, but I really like the feel of the Ithaca more. Being small statured (5'7") I find most shotguns long, heavy, awkward and unwieldy, hence my tendancy to rely on the AR (I've been using M-16A1s for 21 years and they feel like an extension of my own body). The 870 actually isn't bad with the stock retracted all the way.

A Model 97 pump "trench gun". The bayonet is a P-13 Remington. I suppose I should put one of those "blind 'em" super bright tactical lights on it to be humane. (That way the last thing the burglar sees won't be me, naked, in the hallway!)

Hey, another 12 gauge Mossberg 500 here. First round 00 buck, second round slug, then back to buck. Why? Because I'm sick, that's why.
I'm also looking for a Mossberg 500 20 gauge for my girlfriend. She doesn't want to try the 12.

I went with one of the new Mossberg 930 spx semi-autos. This thing is sweet and runs like a sewing machine! I added a rail with a Surfire 6p light to light up the rooms when needed.

I've thought about semi auto shotguns for HD myself. My ONLY issue with them.... is the lack of the sound of the pump. If someone is in your house and hears the "cha chick" of a shotgun pump.... that could be enough to send em running.... of course you could argue that sound would only alert them to your location... so............

That would be the Ithaca 37 DSPS. Matte nickel, 18 1/2 inch barrel, 7 shot.

Did a rough count and to be honest was surprised. I would have thought the 870 would be the hands sown winner but it the Mossburgs by a long shot. The 870 is a DISTANT second with the Ithica 37 right at it's heels.
I myself have an 870-but it seems that the Mossburgs have a large devoted following-What would be really cool though is to find an old barrel for my A-5 and cut it to 18.5".

Caje,
I think it might be a function of the Mossy's 10 year warranty, ambidextrous safety and for a fair amount of time a lower price point? It didn't hurt them landing the DoD contract as well!

My night time HD shotgun is very boring. An Ithaca 37 in 16ga loaded with #1 buck. My daytime HD firearm is even worse, an old Rossi pump action in 22 Mag. You can laugh at the Rossi as a HD firearm if you want. However even when my kids were younger they could shoot that thing well. It is so much fun to shoot that it always went to the range with us. Besides, for the coyotes, raccoons and other vermin we are actually likely to be defending our homestead against it's a good choice.
I've never seen any review where the 22 Mag was rated as a defensive round out of a rifle though, but I would not want to face on.

Hope this is enough to balance things out, I'd hate to have to post the rest......
M870's are the Chevy small block of the shotgun world, and you can actually shoot trap with one, although there are other better choices. Ever try loading one round when your turn comes up through a bottom loading shotgun? Bummer, but I digress - this is about defensive shotguns.....
