Starting watching a review of it and after a few minutes quit. It has all the features to make a traditional lever shooter like me say no.

The inmates appear to be running the asylum.
Once again they are introducing models that no one wants and still won't address the lack of quality control on the models they are already sending out the door.

Don't know what S&W is paying the guy at the
Shot Show who has to tout the gun but it's
not enough.

Absolutely baffling. A niche levergun chambered in .44 mag with rails, polymer, a high price tag, and a lack of retro appeal at a time when they can't even get their flagship revolvers out the door with the tiniest but of QC. I often have trouble understanding S&W.

That said, if the QC winds up being halfway decent, I'd absolutely be keeping an eye out on the used rack of the pawnshops in a few years for one. I kinda dig it.

Kinda baffled myself on this. Not sure why they didn't come out with it in 45 Colt first. I am also one that hopes they offer it in 460 or 500. More 460 because I have the pistol. Love to have a carbine in 460 as well. Just hope they don't make it prohibitively expensive. REALLY don't want them to charge 4-6K for a lever action in 460.

I think it would have been better if they had brought out a bourbon like some people speculated.

Is a stainless steel 44 magnum lever rifle that looks like a cross between a Henry and a Marlin........They call it the model 1854. Put together with Torx screws instead of regular screws.....Plastic stocks.....Crossbolt safety...Magazine tube removal.

Isn't that nice, S&W made themselves a Marlin. I guess their R&D people are into copying other companies. A year or two ago it was copy the Kel-Tec KSG. This year, it's copy Marlin.

They missed their window --- which was during the production lull after Ruger bought Marlin.

Nice looking rifle, but yes it looks just like the Marlins, Henrys, and Chiappas already out there.

That thought has occurred to me whenever I consider most of the “outdoor” companies. As a friend likes to quip, “The golfers have landed jobs in the firearms industry!”

On the other hand, even a junior dinosaur can appreciate some “modern junk,” as Mario Andretti so famously labeled it. GPS and ELTs are excellent examples.

I was surprised at the direction S&W took as well. While this particular configuration doesn’t appeal to me, I might be interested in a lever action in a more robust hunting cartridge say 45/70 or in the 460/500 S&W rounds. I may also be interested in something that meets SASS requirements.

That said, I’d be more interested in a metal framed DA/SA concealable pistol similar in size to the CSX

Wow! Surprised so many on the forum are beating S&W up for such a new market approach. Some said it looks too much like other lever guns (duh), others would prefer another plastic pistol (not enough of those on the market yet I guess), some wanted another metal pistol, give me another caliber some say (.38/.357, .45 Colt, .460, 500 Mag, 45-70), they keep copying other companies, blah, blah, blah. Dang, I like that Smith will capture a new market with new shooters with a traditional-styled lever-action rifle. I personally prefer a new Class 3 but S&W nor the federal gov't asked me. I'm certain Smith has a better vision for staying productive (alive) in the market than I do. Yah for the "home team".

I predict that they'll only sell these to people who buy only because it says "S&W" on the barrel. Otherwise, people will buy based on price, and Ruger/Marlin has this beat on price.

Perhaps S&W can get Dylan Mulvaney of Bud Light fame to be the spokesperson for this highly innovative and much-needed addition to the firearms community.

I'm sure they did some research on the market for these and came to the conclusion there was room for another manufacturer. Unusual choice for them, but I'm O.K. with it. They said the same stuff about Henry when they first came along.

I feel like you guys are being to harsh. Lever guns are a huge trend right now. And I for one am excited that this is the big reveal. This is my excuse to buy another lever action. I do wish they would offer it in 460 and 500 since the only offerings for a lever gun in those calibers cost $4k, but I'm still far from disappointed by this.

Yes, stepping outside of the box for S&W! Marlin's big bore lever actions are extremely popular right now, so I guess that S&W decided to jump in. Not sure who's going to pay that kind of money, though!

Who is going to buy this thing? The old dudes don’t like it because it isn’t traditional. The young guys will buy an AR for half the price.

Like I said earlier, Why not develop something new and cool like an Inertia operated 44?

My guess is they are trying to grab some of the “straight wall cartridge legal for deer” market. Not sure there is a gap in that market that needs filling.

At about the 12 minute mark in the above video the reveiwer states that he can not hunt with this rifle in Iowa because it is not a straight wall cartridge. We all know that the 44 Magnum is a straight wall cartridge and is on the Iowa DNR regs as a approved deer cartridge.

I usually like that guy's reviews, but this was clearly a shill video for S&W.

I was kinda interested until I spied what appears to be a Hillary Hole on the left side of the receiver near the top. That's an instant turn-off. Also they decided the blued wood version is $3500?! Who in their right mind thought that was acceptable? Furthermore, why open with .44? Everyone makes a .44, it's probably the hardest market for new leverguns.
How hard is it for someone to make a classic styled blued and wood .357 levergun that's factory threaded? That's all I want.

Hmmm, I like the look. Favors a Marlin which I like, I find Henry's just plain ugly.

I am not surprised but am disappointed in the unnecessary cross bolt safety, but I looked and didn't see a Hillary hole.

Well........you guys told me.....never say never wih Smith & Wesson.
So I'll keep my thoughts to myself. But it will be difficult.

I have read there is a strong and growing market for lever actions for self defense purposes in states where there are onerous laws concerning semi-auto's and magazine capacity. Polymer, Rails, ect. are a plus in this market.

Maybe S&W's dipping it's toe in this market, just like it did (successfully) with AR's and 9mm carbines. Offering something for folks who want to stay brand loyal?

I like that guys videos. BUT, have you ever noticed he likes to lay new firearms on what appears to be a big old sheet of rusty diamond plate? Somewhere in the middle of that video he more or less drops that new rifle on a wooden bench of some sort, next to a handful of rocks? I just cringe. Anybody can do whatever they want. It’s just not that hard to bring an old towel along. lol

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking S&W for their decision to come out with a lever action rifle. I'm surprised because I didn't realize that the market for lever actions was that big. Maybe I'm wrong.

But aside from the limited edition model for $3499, I'm not too impressed with the looks of the standard 1854. But give them time, they'll make improvements and add new models, but until they do, I'll stick with my new Marlin.

Competition is always a good thing and this new S&W rifle will be compared to Marlins and Henrys very soon. Ruger has done a very good job reviving the Marlin name and their versions are much better quality then the Remington made Marlins. Looking forward to seeing the new S&W in person.

Did you look at the limited edition? Pretty wood, blue metal, only $2220 extra. Plus you can probably get a factory engraved version from the PC. I'm tempted to get one to collect, because the product run is probably going to be small.

Trying to understand why S&W would think a lever action rifle in a pistol caliber would be worthy of the set up investment when Ruger has resurrected Marlin and Henry with many versions and calibers available. In addition, making a “collector” model three times the price of a standard model seems nuts. I predict after a few “collectors” pick a few of them the distributors will be dumping them at cost to get them off their inventory.

There an old rule in marketing that promotes the idea of offering a "complete list" in your product line.

I'm guessing that S&W wants to appear to offer "whatever a customer wants" in their line of firearms. Thus a lever action rifle.

But, I would like to see one of the custom examples in person...

Here's my prediction. It's going to flop.
They are entering a market that is small and already over occupied.

If they wanted to fill the niche. Something along the lines of the old Ruger 44 carbine would have been more well received. Those old guns are highly sought after and are going up in price two fold almost yearly. Im lucky enough to have a 60’s model myself.

I'm down with S&W thinking outside the box and all but, they are known for the 460 and 500 magnum cartridges. Why in the heck did they think the 44 mag was the way to go. They had the prime opportunity to go big with the 460 and 500. Is Dirty Harry now gonna go to the new S&W lever action?

I'm waiting for the 9 MM Luger caliber for the extra high magazine capacity. I'll mount a Simmons 6.5 x 20 x 50 MM scope on it.

Is it April Fools' already? Really, a 44 Mag lever gun that is bipod adaptable.

To my eye, the iron sights look like they could be easily damaged. Of course with a rail, nobody's likely going to use them, anyway. Putting a rail on a lever action sort of reminds me of Heritage's "Tactical Cowboy" concept and that's not particularly a compliment.

Hey, if Henry can try producing revolvers then S&W can play in the lever action sandbox. I don't want to see their lever action line fail but I wish they had put the effort elsewhere. A short run of "classic" revolvers in the harder to find calibers, 32 Mag, 41 Mag etc.. Sans locks of course.

One final comment from me. Henry's Big Boy in .44 Magnum is blued steel and stocked in genuine, non-laminated American walnut. made all the more traditional looking with its straight rather than pistol grip configuration. In short, it's a handsome gun. With the large loop option, the MSRP is $1,110. Now if Henry can put out a product like this at that price point, why shouldn't S&W be able to do the same? A lot of us might line up for that.
