This thing looks very similar to the Henry manufactured rifle. Is it actually made by Henry?

I don’t think so. I had my hands on one a few days ago and it reminded me more of a Marlin-type action. The rifle seemed well set up if you like the style. This one was stainless with plastic furniture. I very much prefer blue and wood so I didn’t care much for it, but I’m sure some will like it fine.

Do you mean the Volcanic lever action? I think Oliver Winchester bought the patents from S&W (or something like that) then later he had B. Tyler Henry (?) use it as a model for the Henry rifle which fired loaded cartridge cases. as opposed to the Volcanic where I think the powder charge was in the base of the bullet. Experts, feel free to correct that.

I think the OP is referring to the new lever action rifle Smith has come out with recently.

It going to be another giant flop of an idea. Seriously who thought that selling a lever action with polymer furniture and sort of "tactical" stuff on it for north of 1700 dollars would be a sales hit. It might sell if it were Mossgerg cheap but at that price its a dust collector. I will also note that it's Butt Ugly.

Note, this is my idea of a lever gun and it only cost me 600 bucks. BTW, a previous owner had it re-barreled in 357 Magnum by Winchester to it's not a collectable but is a pretty shooter.

I agree with everything you said.........And they put it together with torx screws.........It's in the same ugliness class as Henry's revolver.....They must not have marketing Exec's.....Unless all they are out to impress is "tactical tommy".

If they make one in .500 S&W for a reasonable price I will be interested. I'll go so far as to say that NOT making one in .500 S&W would be asinine. A ridiculous revolver cartridge but perfect for a lever action.

I already have a Rossi .44 Magnum. Maybe Rossi will beat them to a .500 as well?

It's an interesting rifle and it IS a S&W.
I will not get my hands on mine until the end of next week due to the recent WA state 10 business day waiting period....
In looking mine over at the store, one interesting feature stood out, the end of the magazine tube can be tilted down in order to be able to load the tube if a suppressor is installed, that's pretty neat. Of course the barrel is threaded, so I'm looking forward to filling it up with .44 specials and shooting it suppressed...
One interesting thing I've been told is that the receiver is the same one used by Aero Precision and Stag Arms (and others?) .... Not sure how to verify that, but will look for validation going forward.
It'll be fun to shoot it side by side with our 44 Mag Marlin 1894.
As for the stainless steel construction, I live in Washington State where's it's rumored to rain all the time (hint - it's not a rumor )

Tombstone 9MM - POF-USA - Modernized Lever action rifle

I held the 1854 for the first time last weekend. It looks and feels good to me....but $1800? Nope. I thought it was a typo. This was supposed to be a $1200 rifle.

Just bought a Marlin 1894 in .357. That scratched the lever gun itch, short term. I'd like to buy the 1854 at a lower price. Will get one eventually. Really like lever guns and this one is well done.

Not sure where the $1800 number came from, the one I just bought was $1120 plus tax........

Buy one now while it is available. There will not be many of those "beautiful" lever guns manufactured. Get in on the hot "collectors' firearm" market while the getting is good. This is the rifle equivalent of the Ford Edsel.

I'll stick to my pre WW2 stuff,,and occasionaly wander into the 1950's.

I was kind of surprised that it was made and adv that the stock and forend were "easily interchangeable and compatible with Marlin® 1894 pattern forends and stocks".

Gun companys usually don't like to even mention another company in their ads unless it's to claim 'We are better than they are'.

I like the new model in 357 but prefer wood furniture. Does anybody out ther know if this model is also compatable with Marlin wood
aftermarket stocks and forearms?

I thought they looked ugly, too, until I got to hold one. For a black-and-stainless gun it is actually quite handsome. Overall, it is an almost-identical, though slightly-modified, copy of a Marlin 336. The wood-stock version looks better, but both are beyond what I would pay. I already have Marlin 336's...

I will say, the shop where I fill in part-time sells every one they get in, and quickly.

I didn’t think much of the Smith lever gun until l handled on in person. No, it’s not a traditional lever gun, but that’s ok. It’s not really trying to be anything else. I applaud Smith for that.

The action is smooth. The trigger on the one I handled was nice.

Have you priced a Miroku or a Ruger/Marlin? Smith isn’t out of line with their price. I like Rossis even tho I don’t own one. The Smith is way out of Rossi’s league.

I don’t know if it’ll be a commercial success, tho.

I just got my new 1854 .357Mag and took it home and right out of the box the action jammed like the 2nd or 3rd cycle. I could not believe it. I called S&W and the lady told me to send it back and it would be 2 months. What a freaking joke. I oiled it pretty good and it would not budge. I tried moving the gate and I have no idea what fixed it for sure but turning it up side down and gate to the ground side and working the lever it finally gave in but it doesn't feel right when I cycle it. I really have to squeeze it to close all the way. Hopefully it will not repeat and was just really dry but I can not recommend buying it. What happened to quality control?? Any ideas what could have caused it?

I might be interested in a 460 Mag. It would go nicely with my 14 inch 460 mag XVR.

There are a number of issues that could cause any lever action to jam, especially those chambered in .357. Most of them are operator preventable.
