The transformation of my M&P 15-22
Hello everyone. I'm a newbie here and have just get into the rimfire scene not so long ago, and now I'm addicted. First with the Sig P229 classic 22 and now this little beast, the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22.
3 weeks with my M&P15-22 was so much fun and it becomes one of my favorite toys, if not the most favorite.
The fun started out with a stock M&P15-22.
The first lot of the accessories was " Tango Down BattleGrip Quick Detach Vertical Grip" and 4 x 25 rounds magazines
then " GG&G Sling Thing, front sling mount", " Blue Force Vickers Sling" and " Magpul MBUS" front & rear sights were added.
Final add on for the "phase I" of the tranformation project is the Eotech 511 .A65 rev F
And here is my little "Transformer" at the current form.
Went through 4 - 500 rounds lately. My rifle loves all CCIs: Stingers, MINI Mag HPs, Wolf and Remington Thunderbolt.
Have got quite a few problem with Rem. Golder Bullet HP and Viper.
All I can say is,.... love it .... love it .... love it !!!

Congrads on your 15-22, you got it lookin saweeeeet!!! Ive tried CCI minimags, Federal 550 bulk pack, and Winchester SuperX SuperSpeedRN, in the 100rd box, and have had great luck with all. Ive also tried some Winchester Wildcats, copule mags full, had 1 hicup per mag. So not to bad.

Thanks to you all for the warm welcome.
Like I have mentioned, I'm so in love with this little 15-22. The "phase II" is on the way, should be completed by Christmas. Hopefully, Santa will be super kind enough to make my dream come true. he he he.
Speaking of MBUS, fortunately, a gun shop (White Marsh Arms) in my area had a set in stock. It looks like the MBUS rear sight is kind of hard to find now a day.

I sneaked out and went to the range this evening.
The 15-22 was throughly cleaned and ready since last week. I brought 3 mags of Federal Lightnings, 3 mags of Mini Mags, and 50 rounds of Rem. Thunderbolt.
The rifle performed flawlessly.
Only one mulfunction, a Thunderbolt stuck/crushed vertically in the magazine lips and failed to get in the chamber.
Other than that, no problem of any kind.
The Walmart's Lightnings were surprisingly good. Not as good as the Mini Mag, but definitely get along well with my 15-22, much better than the Golden Bullet.
Thunderbolts were ok as well, but they weren't very consistant. Some of rounds sounded very weak. I don't have much confident using it. So no more Thunderbolt for the next time.
So, I have a conclusion that I will be using only CCI's Mini Mags, CCI's Stingers and Federal Lightning ammos for my 15-22 from now on.
I really had a blast tonight and the rifle's really fun to shoot. Can't wait until the next time.

After reading the posts about failures, I too am sticking with either Federal bulk or CCI. I will probably shoot the CCI mostly because even though they cost more, they are still substantially cheaper than any brand I shoot through my other AR-15 in .223 cal.

Always good to hear zero malfunctions, regardless of which weapon (s) used.
Maybe S&W should come up with a referral program on their products. A free mag or two per referral that makes a firearm purchase would work for me.

And they told the buyers of the S&W Model 41 the exact same thing. And a few years down the road they more than tripled in price. Buy it cuz they are cool and you like them. If you are looking for a bargain buy a 10/22.

Not really. All the parts that's been added to that 15-22 are standard AR parts. So if he likes, he can use them on any other AR that he has. And when you are talking about the AR platform in general, he's only scratched the surface of spending money on upgrades. The last AR I built from the ground up came out to about $2500 without optics.
In case anyone was wondering how much it probably cost him to build it up this way.
M&P15-22 rifle - $500 (probably less)
Magpul CTR - $115 (or less)
LaRue Indes Clips $20
Hogue Grip - $18
Larue Offset Mount - $89
Tango Down VFG ~ $85
Magpul MBUS front and rear $100
Eotech 511 - $350
Blue Force Vickers Sling $59
GG&G sling thing mount $35
4 extra 15-22 mags $80
Grand total $1451 (not including shipping costs). But My numbers are probably a little high. The only accessory on that list that cannot be used on any other AR, or just about any modern battle rifle, is the 4 extra magazines. So I'd say it's more of an investment in a system than it is on a specific rifle.
I know people who have over $1200 invested in a 10/22 not counting optics. And none of that is reusable in any other firearm.
I'll be working on building mine up to match my regular AR over the next few months (after Christmas). My list of parts is very close to maxicoopers list.
Modified safety selector (ambi safety)
Norgon ambi-catch (already installed)
Magpul CTR
Magpul MIAD grip
Magpul MBUS front and rear
Larue FUG
Larue Index Clips
MS2 Sling
slings mounts (haven't decided which ones yet)
Eotech XPS2
I'm also going to get the BBL threaded for FH/Supressor and then a Gem-tech outback II will be the final item. But these item's are the last on the priority list right now.
Great job on the M&P15-22 maxicooper. Enjoy.

Right. Kinda like buying a high-end portable GPS... it'll work wherever you decide to put it. And if the 15-22 is the first AR style firearm someone has purchased, they would do well to invest in quality optics if they think they'll eventually move to centerfire. As a gadget junky, I get a lot of use and fun from the inexpensive Chinese merchandise too.
As they say.... 'it's all good'

TH, you're spot on.
My budget is $1,300 at the beginning. At current stage, it was "very" close to the plan.
Fortunately, I got some of the mods from local gun stores which help me saved some shipping cost. I also got an Eotech from my fellow shooters at a discount price.
What will go over the budget will be barrel threaded, flash hider and trigger upgrade. Those will be the final touch to the rifle.
The goal is to make a "Tacticool" and fun to shoot AR, for me and my kids to enjoy shooting and to spend valuable time together. And my son loves it, that is priceless.
I found that modding AR was additive than modding my MINI.

I can relate, I gave up auto-xing my 87 BMW and have focused on upgrading my M4s......and have just started on the M&P15-22. I see some hand-me-downs making there way onto the 15-22.
THIS IS A LOT OF FUN!!!
BUT.... THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW!

Where is that Autox? Almost looks like Columbia SC at the stadium. By the way there is a sale going on for used M-16's. Seems like a good deal if you have the money.
