M&P 15-22 short magazine
Anyone know why S&W didn't op to use the short 10 round mag in the M&P 15-22 compliant model? I kinda liked the shorter version.

S&W will probably have their short 10 round out after the SHOT Show. Compliant guns will still ship with the 25/10 pinned mag, but you should be able to buy the short 10 from customer service. The part number is 404950000.

Just talked to Customer Service. The Part number for the 10/10 magazines is actually #407030000. Price $20.04. They had a few come in but sold them all out. They are now on back order.
The magazine with part #404950000 is the 10/25 magazine to which they don't know if they are going to make anymore of. Take this with a grain of salt but the CS rep said they may switch the magazines for compliant states to the 10/10 magazines once they start coming in. The 10/25 magazines was a short term fix to get the 15-22 guns out to those compliant states.

I just talked to 'Joe' at 800 331 0852 Option #7. He says there is no part number for the short 10rd magazine as it does not exist yet for another 10 weeks or so. Joe also said 407030000 was the long 25rd mag capped for 10. So.... .... seems like there's a different answer for each phone that rings in Massachusetts.
I asked Joe what was the short mag pictured with the compliant model on their web site. He said it was just a .223 mag.

No offense but I'm going to go with CS Joe doesn't seem to have all the information. Check out the link below, this is not a 223 mag. Looks just like 25 rounder just shorter.

I'll tell you one thing the ten round retrofit mag sucks. It doesn't have the side assist like the 25 rounders. It does have a blue tab at the back that helps load five or six rounds but after that you'll struggle. Very rough on the fingers and slow to load. I love the gun but why send it out if it's not finished? Oh yeah ran 200 rounds of CCI through it without a failure. My thumb is sore but it was worth it. Cheap fun!!

Guys in compliant states have been screaming for S&W to make the gun available to them. So in order to do that, S&W had to make a magazine fix till the 10 rounders available from their supplier. Now guys upset the compliant mags hard to load. S&W dammed if they do or they don't.

Maybe, but how hard would it have been to put a load assist button on the 10 round mag? I've looked at it and I don't see a single reason why they would leave it out, except maybe to save money, which is just damn greedy.

27 I'm not complaining about the gun and I had no problem waiting (I was waiting for my licence to carry anyways) then I saw it was out and picked it up. My complaint is only with the mag. Only good thing is you save on ammo. Wonder if S&W will swap out for the short version when they get them. I also wondered about the load assist buttons?????

If you want a straight answer to your SW questions, call Customer Service, 1-800-331-0852, extension 3766 and talk with Kelley. She is, by far, the best customer service rep I've ever dealt with in any company.

Buy a 25 round "rebuild kit" from 44mag, install the plug from ebay, and just like magic, your compliant. If the plug needs to permanant, just drill some holes thru the end cap and keeper and screw it or rivet it in place.

Just got off the phone with S&W absolutely no future plans on making a short mag for the 15-22. Said the proto design didn't pan out. But it's not a dead issue either. I hope!

For those who are disappointed to hear this, simply call S&W for a different answer. Follow the appropriate prompt.
#1 Short mag for sale but out of stock
#2 Have part number but not yet being manufactured
#3 No part number yet but being manufactured
#4 No future plans
#99 Never heard of any problems with 15-22 but will send shipping label.

LOL!
I am working on an option #7, No 7, or Old Number 7, whatever -- "MAKE YOUR OWN!"
Watch for a post on "DIY" 5-Round SHORT Mags to follow later this weekend...
My SHORT 5-Round Mag is done, I just need to range test it ( worked OK in the cellar with CB Caps, cycled manually) and then take some pix for you guys.
Tight groups...

A SHORT 5-round magazine.
I will post a longer "DIY" posting tomorrow (on a new message thread), complete with details & pix for "how to" do this!
Stay tuned...
Old No7
ps: Yes, I know the "toe" is backwards... There's a good reason for that, which will be explained tomorrow...

Thank you Old No 7! I took your pick and did one myself. Here is the process I used in an article I posted on another forum:
Quote:

The M&P 15-22 makes a great AR training tool and I am loving mine. The only downside that I have with the rifle is with the lack of magazine options that are currently available. Right now there are 26 round mags (red followers) and 10 round mags (blue followers). This makes sense except the 10 round mags are the same length as the 26 rounders and despite early talk of a new set of magazines, none have been seen in the real world to my knowledge.
Why short mags? Well, a shorter mag gives a distinct advantage in getting low to the ground for the type of prone shooting we do at Appleseed. The short mag both allows the shooter to get lower but also is easier on magazine changes in the same position.
So the only option is to adapt, and by that I mean the magazine. Following what others had mentioned trying, I ordered 3 mags from a dealer in TN and had them in less that 48 hours (nice guy!). The rifle only came with one mag and I wanted 2 full capacity and 2 lower capacity (8-10 rounds).
This is what I got in the mail:
I began by scoring the spot where I wanted to do the first cut:
The I pinned down the follower and spring:
Then came the cutting which I did with a small saw:
After getting the magazine into two pieces, the spring, follower, magazine horizontal bar, and "floor retainer piece" all came out easily. BTW, the plastic is thick and makes a powdery mess when cutting. I got to use the vacuum a lot.
Now I scored and cut the bottom piece that would become the "bottom plate":
The cuts were not perfectly level so a file was used to level the pieces that were to be matched:
This took a long time and was followed by a knife to clean up the edges:
Finally I clipped off 1/3 of the spring, epoxied the bottom back on as best I could and secured it together to dry. Here is the final product:
She looks good unloaded, but I needed to do a quick check of an 8 round mag. The rounds loaded easily and felt like I could get in 10 pretty easily. This is 8:
All in all, it was a very easy mod and was done on the couch while working on other things and watching a red dwarf episode with the kids. Now that I have one down, I am going to do a second and try to make this one look nicer.
Tomorrow I will take them to the range to be sure of their function, but I am pretty sure that they will be just fine.
For anyone with an M&P 15-22 and a need for a shorter mag, just do it. It is really quite easy!

Thanks again Old No 7, your pictures were perfect and good enough that I could even get an idea of what spring tension needed to look like.
P.S. Yes, I signed up here just to thank this thread for the help in solving a problem that I had. I plan to stick around though!

Your work looks great. I ran 750 rounds through my 15-22 in the past week and half of them were through the shortened mag. (thanks Old#7) with out one malfunction. Now I can sit at the bench without the mag hitting it plus I think they look much better. I'm doing a second one next week.

What is a good price for a new M&P 15-22. I have been looking, and they are not that easy to find around here. I found one at a gun shop, and he wants $529.95 + tax. Is that a fair price or not. I have noticed on the net, that some of the M&P's have a flash serpressor, and some don't. The one I am looking at does. Does that make a difference in the price?

Lowest I have seen in this area is 399. Most other places 425-450 around here.

530 bucks is indeed a bit steep. My local FFL here in Maine ordered one (811033) for me and it came to $427.20 shipped.
ECGS has the "threaded barrel with flash hider" model (sku 811033) for $395.01 - Shipping and your local FFL transfer fee should still put one in your hands for under 450.00
Smith & Wesson SWG811033 22 LR S&W M&P 15-22 TACTICAL 16.5" THREADED BBL 30 RD 811033 S&W FIREARMS, M&P 1522, Semiautomatic, 22 Long Rifle, Matte Black, Adjustable A2 Post Front/Adjustable Dual Aperture Rear, Collapsible Six Position, 5.5 lbs, OAL 33
Where ever you find one and what ever you pay for it, you're sure to enjoy it. It's "5 pounds of fun".
