Default Blown off extractor - 15-22

I've been on vacation visiting my parents in TN and shooting the 15-22 with my dad and friends for the last three weeks. We put a lot of rounds through the gun with very few issues. Mainly a couple a of failure to fires. In over 1500 rounds we had maybe 5. Then I went to Walmart and they did not have any more federal bulk ammo so I bought the remington bulk, 550 rounds per box. We were starting to have a couple or more of FTF per magazine. Then yesterday after a couple of hundred rounds of the Remington bulk. I was trying to shoot up the two boxes. One of the rounds blew out the side of the casing and blew off the extractor. It made me jump when flames came out the ejection port. I'm so mad. We were having so much fun and it had been working great since getting it back from S&W to fix the ejector. Now I'm going to have to send it back in. When I get back home later this week I'll have to try and remember to post some pics of the shell.

I went to one of the gun shops in Brighton, TN and they have two M&P 15-22's without the muzzle break for around 560 dollars. Seemed pretty expensive. The gun shop by me in NH has them for 420. Plus in TN they have 8.25% sales tax.

It was shooting so good too. We shot a lot of Ammo in the past couple of weeks. Close to 600 or 700 rounds at least of 9 mm in my Springfield Armory XDM. We shot about 10 rounds of 30-06 through my Dad's Savage Walmart special bolt action. Then a few rounds through the muzzleloader he gave me. About 40 rounds of 12 gauge bird shot yesterday after the 15-22 broke. We also shot a clip of .45 ACP in full auto from his friend's Thompson Machine Gun. That was fun!! And then we also shot a few dozen rounds through my first rifle, a Norinco bolt-action .22. What a great .22 rifle that is! Wish you could still buy them new in the US. We went deer hunting too but it was too cold. The deer just weren't moving. It was like -2 in the mornings.

remington strikes again!

sorry to hear about your rifle but glad to hear all was going well until the ill advised switch to remington ammo.

Yeah, they can do that. So can any other semi auto.

What ammo are you guys using?

I just bought mine Monday, put apx 100 rounds of fed bulk ammo in it. No ftf or fte but I did have one oob discharge. It doesnt appear to have damaged the gun but I am sending in for inspection anyway. Does anyone know what the fix is?

Ron

All of the feedback I have gotten is to avoid using the Remington ammo in the S&W rifles. Every single blow-out that I am aware of has been with Remington ammo.

OOBs are common with all makes of .22 semi autos. Usually caused by out of spec ammo. Also .22s create a lot of dirt that could possibly prevent the cartridge from going all the way in the chamber.

The real fix is to shoot a bolt action gun.

I guess I must be doing something wrong because OOBs are not common with my semi-auto .22s. Any chance you could post a 'How To' ?

Guess you caught me on using the word "common". If I could post a 'How To' I could also post a 'How not To'
