Thanks for the information! I figured by the way it had the lip on the inside there was likely a plug for it. I also found a tool kit on ebay that looks like it fits inside the grip (acts as a plug and has tools in it).

I can't speak from hands on experience but other's have posted here that certain Magpul stocks have adjustment for the tension against the tube. The slop doesn't bother me as much since I added on a cheek piece and a butt stock, it made the whole component more heavy and less audibly clunky.

I have a Magpul CTR stock & the friction lock tightens it down very nicely. No slop in it.

Uh oh.....this explains why my selector switch spins freely (and can be easily pulled out of the receiver) after I tried to install a new grip. I saw the metal piece fall out of the receiver after I removed the grip and set the two spring aside, then turned over the rifle. I guessed that it went under the spring that holds the takedown pin in place. But I didn't see any small plastic piece under the other spring. And after reading these posts and examining the selector switch carefully, I don't see one now.

Brett, would it possible for you to post a picture of what the plastic piece (that I assume goes under the selector swith spring) looks like? Or better yet, does someone have a S&W part number?

Thanks either way. Looks like a trip to a gunsmith might be in my future....

The piece you lost is the Safety Selector Detent (looks similar to the photo below) and it is made of metal not plastic. It's pointed on one end and the pointed end is the end that goes up (and rides in the safety selector's groove).

[I was really tempted to just write "The fix is in." echoing the mysterious posting on 3/13 that still has me scratching my head.]

The few gun shops that were open on Sunday didn't have anyone manning the AR-parts counter, so I motored on down to the big Richmond gun show. Found a parts table right away and spotted the safety selector detent piece. Bought an extra set of detents (safety and breakdown pin) and springs for future "oops" episodes.

Note that the safety selector spring that came with the 15-22 is a bit longer than the 'AR standard' one I bought, but I tried it and that one worked, with just a bit less pressure felt when you work the selector.

I really appreciate your help.....it's nice to have my favorite toy back in good working condition. Looking forward to many more of your videos.

I'd like to experiment with the handguard. Perhaps you've posted instructions somewhere for removing the handguard, but I haven't spotted them.

Before I go breaking my rifle, does the handguard just pull straight off, away from the receiver? Do I need to twist it at all? Is there a bolt or catch somewhere I'm not spotting?

I was going to shoot a barrel removal video, I used blue locktite on my flash hider and can't get it off, so I need to order a pair of Tacticool's barrel vise jaws in order to do the video, and that's not on the front burner at the moment.


Basically, if you have a flash hider remove it, if not then just remove the hand guard end cap by depressing all four of the end cap tabs (you will see them in the holes at the end of the hand guard). Once the end cap is removed you need to remove the barrel nut which requires you either make or buy the special barrel tool that is needed. I have a blueprint posted in the barrel tool sticky.

Once the barrel nut is removed the hand guard simply pulls straight off of the upper receiver and if you want to remove the barrel it slides out the back of the upper receiver.

Ah, now the tube-look for the barrel nut wrench makes sense.....has to reach down the length of the handguard. I was thinking my plain old AR wrench would suffice. I see your blueprint, but you say that someone sells those things?

Also, this clues me in to *never* use thread locker on my flash hider....I enjoy swapping them out too much....I've got 5 of them, including the big fake CAN one.

Yep the 15-22 uses a specific type of castle nut and since it's all "sandwitched" together you need a long tubular wrench that the barrel fits inside.

Shooboy (Randy) here on the forums makes the ShooWrench to remove the barrel and also Tacticool22 here on the forums has a web site and he makes a wrench as well as a hand guard adapter (which you will need if you want to use an AR Delta Ring) and also makes barrel vise jaws.

I ordered the one from tacticool22.com today.

Back when I ordered the handguard converter from them, I remember looking at the photo they posted of the barrel nut wrench and not knowing what I was seeing. They've got a bunch of them stacked together so it looks like a pile of weird barrel nuts instead of "wrenches". So I figured they'd messed up on the photo and assumed that the 15-22 handguard would snap or pull off and I could use my "real" barrel nut wrench.

Ah well, that means another few days (at least) 'till I can swap out the handguard while I wait for the shipment to arrive. The problem with these delays is I feel compelled to order more stuff . Waiting for just a *wrench* to be delivered is too tedious....I've now got a Vltor E-MOD stock and some really cool rail covers on way.

Tracking shipments for new BLACK RIFLE STUFF has become an obsession. They should have a special cable channel, kind of like ESPN, where the crawl would give regular status updates for packages. We could bet on the results to see who would get their packages first. We could organize the express companies into leagues with weekly matchups......FedEx vs. USPS, DHL vs. UPS, and so on, scoring points for the number and speed of AR/15-22 deliveries.

And I think you are on the right track with the end cap bolted to the A2 Sight Post. That's what I did on my airsoft M4 when I switched over to a real steel Delta Ring, End Cap and M4 hand guards. Worked like a charm since there is no gas tube in the mix.

Thanks for the vids. I had ordered the JP Enterprises JPS3.5 Trigger Spring Set but it didn't come with instructions. I started searching on this site and found Brett's vids. which explained it all. I did discover the 2 detent pieces and their springs by myself though but I managed to figure out where they went by myself (I was upgrading the grip at the same time).

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is a gunsmithing hammer used for?

The same as a normal hammer, but the heads have fully flat striking surfaces and multiple materials. This is so you don't have to use a steel face while tapping on a receiver.

Plus the construction weights the hammer better than something made for brute force.

No more using the butt of a screwdriver when you don't want a chunk of steel swinging around and are too lazy to go find your brass or nylon/rubber mallots.

For Gunsmithing

It's for driving pins of various types in firearm receivers, without doing damage. The heads are fully flat and made of numerous materials so you can choose the best material for the job. You don't want to tap a steel pin into a receiver with a steel hammer. You always want to use a softer material that won't mar the firearm or it's components. And as Rustspot said, the weighting is different, these are for delicate work not driving nails. They are well balanced and you can easily drive a pin into a receiver with the Shoo Hammer without even having to move your hand, you can pivot the hammer in your palm.

Bit of constructive criticism - a bit of lighting behind the camera from a lamp or something will light up the parts facing the camera. The parts you're talking about aren't too complex, but it will give a bit of definition and make the black on black parts contrast better.

Thanks for the barrel removal videos. It's not rocket surgery but it gives us a bit more confidence not having to figure it out as we go or translate written instructions with parts in hand.
