Default FTE issue/fix, maybe.

First let me say hi as i am new here and thanks for all the info on this site.

Short story 2 rifles same batch no blue springs either one, mine works great no problems, but the other one has ejection problems and does it all the time no matter what ammo you feed it, so i took both apart to see what the difference was, found the extractor pin on the problem rifle to be to tall where it graps the rim (ammo rim diameter can be 6.82mm-6.92mm fedral bulk blue box ammo, even winchester super X 26gr tin hallow points have about the same OD on the rim just alot less of the smaller ODs rims ) the 6.92mm has no issuses ejecting, but the smaller rim does as the extractor pin cant hold on to the smaller rim. it is not the extractor pin that is at fualt, its the bolt as they cut it to high where the extactor pin sits, as when i took mine apart both extractor pins were the same size shape. after i messed around with the extractor pin it was ejecting 100% better, ( bullets ejecting across the room instead of you turning the rifle sideways and shaking it to get them out, was just pulling back on the charge handle to eject them) so the true test will be to take it out and fire it, when i do i will let you all know how it goes. if this does fix the issue i will let you know what i did to the extractor pin.

if you want to see what i am talking about pull the bolt out in slide a round into the extrator pin and see if it graps it tight snug or falls out.

pic 1 is Fedaral bulk rim OD 6.94mm bullet is nice and straight.

pic 2 is same bulk ammo OD 6.84mm if you look, bullet is nosed down a little as it is not tight in the extractor pin but ejects fine still. the problem rifle would not even hold the rim and bullet would fall out, now after messing with it it holds great.

Default update

well just got back firing the rifle after i messed with the extractor to hold the case rim tighter.

Ammo

Fedral bulk brown box had 1 FTE out of 25

Fedral bulk blue box had 1 FTE out of 25

winchester bulk 333 Had 1 FTE out of 25

Remington Subsonic 100 pack 0 FTE out of 25

didnt try the winchester super X tins as they are my small game ammo and everyone is out right now.

This is very good for this rifle as before every other round would FTE.

In my rifle, i have no issues firing any brands of ammo.

loaded mag and didnt pay attention how they ended up in it, as with my rifle i have never ran into that problem.

played with the extractor some more and will go shoot it sunday, we will see.

I dont know if i should post what i am doing to it as it will void the warranty on you're rifle from S&W.

I like to get to the bottem of things and why something dont work.

not sure if anyone is following this. lol

Well went out today and shot the rifle and it worked like a rifle should.

Fedral bulk brown box, Fedral bulk blue box, winchester bulk 333, winchester super X tins, winchester wild cat.

i took a random 50 of each and Mic them, and separated by rim size going 0.03mm apart from 6.81mm to 7.00mm thats a big difference.
( the worst rim size, incontinence was fedral bulk )

The rifle eat all the ammo i gave it with out issue.

the pics i am posting are a stock extractor and the one i was working on. the workd on extractor looks like **** in the pic, but it does not look like that in person.

If anyone is thinking of trying this, just let you know it will VOID THE WARRANTY ON YOU"RE RIFLE!!!!

It looks like you have found the solution to the extractor problem. I have an occasional failure to extract on mine so will have to take a look at the extractor.
Thanks for posting this

Well it's not the extractors fualt. its the bolt, it is cut wrong and moves the extractor to far forward so it wont pinch the casing rim.

to find out if it is the bolt/extractor causing the issue just measure the casing rims, anything over 6.93mm + should fire fine, anything under this is where they start to FTE.

or it could just be you need to bend the ejector up a little. as i had taken my 100% firing rifle barrel off to have it threaed and after putting it back toghter it would FTE here and there, i just bent the ejector up a little and works 100% now. dont confuse this rifle with the rifle i am talking about in this post as there two different rifles.

Hey Sub!

I'm really glad you referred me to this thread because I find this information to be very interesting and especially so after having some extractor problems with a different manufacturers firearm last year. After receiving little or no help from that manufacturer other than to send it back on my dime I decided to make a few alterations to the extractor on my own. After a little judicial stoning to the original extractor I got the rifle working 100% and saved myself a few bucks in addition. However, I will never purchase another product from that manufacturer in the future and when asked I will never promote their products to anyone.

Good thread. But I think you mean 6.81 to 7.00 mm. Or a difference of .19mm or .00748 inches.
