Default Where to mount a red dot.

I've noticed that alot of people running red dots have them on diffrent spots on their rails. Is there any sort of "rules" or reasons for this. Or is it just slap it on where it fits and leave it. Does having it closer or farther back allow for easier shooting with both eyes open?

According to the US Army Field Manual FM3-22.9
Although any notch is acceptable, testing has shown that the farther away the M68 is from the soldier's eyes, the better his field of view.

kinda.... sorta...

handguard rail is not exactly straight with reciever rail. stare at your rifle you'll see it.

Chuck has his mounted all the way at the front of the rail .. its a red dot on a rimfire not a 56mm on a target rifle.. put it where you like it at and run it... the further from your eye the better

Ive noticed that mounting it in the middle also gives it a better balance to the rifle.

Another advantage is a slightly faster target aquisition as opposed to having it mounted more to the rear.

Very cool guys. I just got a stock for my 10 22 so I'll start shooting that again. The Bushnell is going on that, and then probably when I got a shotgun it'll go on that. I love the way it looks, the glass is clear but it is way too heavy! Mounted all the way up it totally unblances the rifle.

LOL!

I do agree though, the further forward the better your FOV will be. Even though it's zero mag with unlimited eye strain, it just works better further up.

I get excellent results as far forward as possible. Note the covers flip down, not up in the field of vision.

My original, handled model M4 with M68 COO.
My M&P15-22 with "aimpoint" clone.

Here are some pics of red dot placement. No measurable difference in performance.

I have found mounting it further away is best. I would also advise to mount it where the weapon is going to feel best balanced. Not too front heavy and not to back heavy. Experiment and see what you like just don't forget to report back so you can tell us about your findings. Enjoy!
