Hey, folks .... I'm new here and just purchased the 15-22 last week. I'm not all that much of a long gun shooter, but I also have a 10/22 and a mini14. I'm basically a handgunner.

I like the mini, but shooting .22 is much less expensive than the .223 rnd. So, I tho't that getting the S/W 15-22 would solve my problem of shooting several hundred rounds at one time. Plus, the 15/22 is a very kewl gun !

I've spent some time looking at the threads/posts regarding optics for the 15/22. I looked alot at the optic planet site and some recommendations from this forum.

I'm thinking of ordering the NcStar Mark III 3x9x42 (3942G) with adaptor mount red dot pkg. I guess the last bit is a red dot unit that mounts on top of the Mark III, but I'm not sure since optic planet does not show this or explain. I think it's about $165ish delivered.

Sorry I'm so ignorant.

I suppose some folks have different opinions, and I welcome them, too. But, here's what I wonder about ..... does this unit have the red dot dealie mounted on top of the scope? And, which red dot unit is it if anyone knows?

And ... I know this seems stupid .... do I need a rail to mount this scope? I guess I want it above the oem iron sights (or do I remove them?)

I do have other things I want to add to the gun, but this is where I'm starting.

All help is appreciated. Thanx.

With a magnified scope you will not be doing a co-witness setup, that is generally used with zero magnification red dot scopes. You could mount a scope on a carry handle but most find that's too high.

With a Mark III you may want a riser to elevate the scope off the flat top. I haven't added one to mine yet, but a little more elevation off the flat top would be nice.

Here is what the scope you are referring to, looks like. It's called the Ultimate One Sight System.

You'd most likely want to remove the iron sights. The top rail of the 15-22 will be fine as long as the scope has a weaver/picatinny mount.

That's probably what they're talking about. I think NcSTAR calls it their MKIII Ultimate Sighting System. There's a small ring with a rail around the eyepiece that has their small reflex red dot mounted to it.

It's a pretty good choice. 3x is pretty decent for out to 50 yards, and 9x will be good out to 100. The red dot can be used for close targets inside of 25yards. I'd zero the scope for 100, find what hold you need for 50, and zero the dot sight for 25.

Edit - Brett posted while I was typing, he's got some good shots of the sight.

Also, I forgot to add that I'd remove the dot sight from the top of the scope and get one of the 45-degree mounts from rrages. You're closer to the bore with that so you'll be able to use it more effectively at varying close ranges where having it a few inches over the top will effect POI vs POA.

Thanx for the replies. I appreciate it.

Where would I find a "rail piece" that would elevate the scope above the oem postion?

Also, I see where several posters talk about "co witness" (or some such) the iron sights with scopes. I think I know what this means, but I don't see where that would be a plus. If so, please clue me in.

hopefully that explains why it won't work with magnification. the view of the iron sights would be manipulated in such a way they were no longer showing correctly.. that is if you could even see your front iron with magnification there.

You can look for a simple riser. You should probably wait until you get the scope to see if you need it higher to use it comfortably. They're simply a length of rail that clamps on to the rifle's receiver and provides a slightly elevated platform to mount the scope to. They come in a few different heights.

Using a riser can also allow you to keep the iron sights in place since the irons will no longer be in the way. This may not be ideal if the eye-relief of the scope needs it mounted where the rear sight is. Eye-relief refers to the distance your eye needs to be from the back of the scope to get the proper field of view and sight picture.

For cowitness...

With scopes it refers to the objectives in line with where the sights would be. This is good so you're always getting the same tight cheek weld no matter what sighting system you're using. You can't keep the rear sight on for this, but the focus of the scope should allow you to keep the front sight on if you want to.

When you're using red dots for the main sight it refers to being able to use the iron sights through the tube of the red dot. This way you can zero the irons for a further distance out and use them for more precise shots, or you can zero them for similar distances and use the iron sights if your battery dies or the dot isn't usable for some reason.

Again, thanx.

You are making this all quite clear.

I'm sorry I'm such an ignoramus, but as I said, I'm a handgunner. I don't even use sights. I was trained to shoot with both eyes open, concentrating on the target .... point and shoot with a triangular/athletic ready stance. I don't shoot much further out than 25-30 feet. But, I do move around when I'm shooting and shoot fast. Defensive stuff.

So, shooting with a long gun and a scope/sights is all new to me.

The 15-22 is a fine gun and I hope to shoot it Monday at my range ... weather permitting here in CT-land. I am also looking forward to moding the gun with some of the additons I've seen on this message board. You folks are really great and helpful to us less informed people. That's terrific !

How are you going to use your MP1522? For me, 95% of the time is at the indoor range at 25 yards and under, so I went with a Primary Arms M3 multi-reticle, cowitnessed with the stock sights. When I shoot outdoors at 100 yards, I have a 3-9x target scope mounted on a quick-release riser. I can change over everything in less than 5 minutes, everything holds zero, and total cost about $200.

All of my shooting will be done at an outdoor range. The maximum distance is a bit over 100 yards, which is fine for me. I'm not interested in shooting at longer distances than this anyway. So, probably 50 - 100 yards is where I'll shoot the 15-22.

Just got back from the outdoor range.. Checked my sighting at 100 yards then bumped up the Bullet Drop Compensator to 200 yards and held about 4 dots on the reticule and was killing clay pigeons @ 202 yards :)

Brett ...

I noticed you have the red dot off set to the left on the rifle scope. I guess it makes no difference where it is set as long as it is sighted in ... yes?

And, being off set allows you to access the top adjustment of the sight?

With a magnified scope you will not be doing a co-witness setup, that is generally used with zero magnification red dot scopes.
You can co-witness a magnified scope, but the magnification has to be variable. It must also be a 1x power scope, with long enough eye relief.
