Default Long term storage, Going to Basic

I'm getting everything set before i head to bmt and just realized I have nothing set up for my guns. I figure i'll be gone minimum 5 months and possible a year. What should i do to protect them while i'm gone. My wife likes to keep the house very warm and i have to deal with chicago weather.

1) clean them
2) apply an anti corrosion product like:

Barricade
BIRCHWOOD CASEY : BARRICADE - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools - BROWNELLS

or

Shooters Choice Rust Prevent

or a similar product.

3) Store them in the driest part of your home.
- if you put them in a safe, throw some DESI PAKs in the safe to keep the moisture as low as possible

BROWNELLS : DESI PAK - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools - BROWNELLS

Five months?! Just clean 'em -- with CLP -- and put them in a gun cabinet in a dry place. Back of the closet is fine.

My husband's been in for 14 years now and has loved every minute of it. I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for joining.

CLP, or CLP Collectors (both available nearly everyplace.) Slather too much on the guns (but not the wood.) Then if you want to be safer, go to the grocery and buy the 1 Gallon size of brand name bags. ZIPLOC. Not the economy priced thin ones, the good thick ones. Then just bag each gun separately. Expel as much air (it contains the moisture). Then just put them up. They'll be fine.

I've got my guns in a cheap gun safe with a box of silica gel from midwayusa.com. I also have most of my guns in the silicon coated gun socks. They work pretty good and cheap.

Thank you and thank him for me.

Would a rifle with good amount of clp wrapped in a sock be overkill? I just don't want to prep for 5 mo and it turns into a year.

For the six consecutive years I was overseas my guns sat in my parents' closet in Alabama in gun socks (long guns) and foam-lined pistol cases. When I put them away they were clean and wiped-down, but I didn't coat them with any protectant. They were just fine when I returned.

Yesterday I looked at several rifles in my gun cabinet that I know I've not fired in a couple of years. All are in perfect condition. Merely cleaned, lubricated, and put away, nothing special. CLP, of course.

Yup. It makes for a much cooler final scene when you pull the trigger on a live round and it doesn't fire.
