Magpul CTR Mil-spec stock still has play? :-(

So I just got my CTR Mil-spec on my 15-22, and while it doesn't wobble in all directions now like the factory stock, there's still some lateral movement/play on the stock with the friction part enabled.

Is that normal? Seems a bit disheartening for $100, though a marked improvement over the factory stock...

Wow that sux :(

I don't believe this is normal as I have the CTR Mil Spec stock on my 15-22 and it doesn't move at all once the friction lock is set.

I had a MOE Mil Spec stock for a while but it moved too much for my tastes (way better than the stock CAR style stock which wobbled something fierce).

Hopefully someone else can chime in and offer some suggestions...maybe you somehow received a Commercial version of the CTR even though the packaging indicates Mil Spec

If I have the stock pressed against the front (shortest length), there is zero play. As soon as I move it back, however, any amount, there's definite play. I'll take it back to the gun shop tonight and see if they can figure it out....

Magazine

Hello guys I just found a 50 round drum magazine for our m&p 15-22 @ SHOOTERS Firearms&Accessories Drum, S&W M&P 15-22 $ 77.99.

Let us know what you find out. I was considering the CTR because I can't stand the toys-R-us factory stock.

No it's a MAG310-BLK. CTR Mil-spec.

So, I went to the shop, and they pulled out another brand new CTR Mil-spec, and it had the same issue on my 15-22. So I suspect on our guns it's not completely snug. It's light years better than the factory stock, but it's not as perfect as Magpul would have you believe. That said, it caused no issue during use. It has some fore/aft movement, but once you push it against you, it never moves.

That slight movement front to back is normal. If you think about the way the friction device works, it can't easily remove play in that direction. When you move the stock to the position you want, simply push it forward and lock it. Problem solved.

What do you mean problem solved? It still has play when you pull it back/forward. I mean it's not a huge issue, but for $100 it should fit properly tight. Heck, even the manual says it should have zero play. And my AFG has play on it forward and back. I like Magpul, but I don't think their stuff is as "awesome" as some people think. I'm happy to use their stuff, but it's a tad misleading to me how their products are described...

I'd be willing to bet that the play is because the picatinny rails on our 15-22s are slightly undersized. Almost any stock is a great improvement over the OEM stock. I've got an ACS on mine and consider it $130 well-spent. I've got to pick up another for the AR I'm building. The stock is definitely tighter, though, on the AR buffer tube than it is on the 15-22 receiver extension.

^ ^ I have a feeling you're correct. Seems like a crock, though, that the 15-22 is advertised as having picatinny rails, when really they're just undersized picatinny rails, therefore are NOT picatinny rails. And the buffer tube is slightly undersized, too?

So maybe it's not Magpul's fault - it's S&W's?

The MagPul website for the CTR Mil-Spec (CTR - Compact/Type Restricted - CTR Carbine Stock – Mil-Spec Model) also says this:

"* Friction lock performance may vary depending on the receiver extension's dimensional tolerances"

Are you sure you got the Mil-Spec and not the Commercial-Spec model?

The diameter of the mil-spec tube is 1.14", the commercial-spec tube diameter is 1.17. I've known magpul to ship the commercial-spec by accident in place of the mil-spec. Measure it and see if thats what happened.

I definitely got the Mil-Spec. As I said above, I even went back and tried another Mil-Spec, and the issue is still there. I figure it's normal for the 15-22 buffer tube. It's very slight fore/aft movement. It's slight, but it's there.

I have a ctr mil-spec about to arrive tomorrow. I want to see how bad this play is...

Well then they shouldn't advertise zero-movement stocks!

You expect Magpul to be accountable for the tolerances every manufacturer in the AR world uses? Their product is performing exactly as designed, if that's not good enough for you then return it and find something better. Good luck on that one.

fore/aft as in rocking or just straight fore and aft? Or is it lateral movement left and right?

They do say on their web site that "* Friction lock performance may vary depending on the receiver extension's dimensional tolerances", and in your first post you say its having to do with the friction lock enabled.

Call 'em up and tell them about it, and your view as to their advertisement for zero movement.
