new M&P 15-22 owner with questions

Hey all, first time posting. I have a M&P 15-22 on order and have a few questions. First are the front sights removable? I heard they get in the way of most optics. Second....whats a decent red dot for just plinking or small game hunting? BSA decent? The gun is primarily for plinking with the kids during the summer, but I thought it would be a fun little gun to hunt squirrel or rabbit with. I would prefer to stay under 50 dollars for a red dot but from looking around I don't think that's possible. Looking for any input and thx in advance!

if you go to Cabelas or some sporting goods store you can find rimfire scopes and red dots for under $50

yes the iron sights are removable

I am also a newbie. I bought a RGB dot scope at Academy Sports for $40. It has. 5 MOA illuminated Red, Green, Blue center dot with a 30mm lens and integrated 3/8 and 5/8 rail mount. It is a BSA Huntsman. Attaches with only a screwdriver.
 
I put a truglo 2x42mm dual color red dot on mine and love it. Easy to zero and seems to hold well. I bought mine online for around 85 bucks shipped (retails for around 130). If you don't need/want the 2 x magnification or the dual color (single color are red dot only which is best for daylight) you can find them in the 50 dollar range. This red dot mount directly to the rail. Scope will most likely require you to buy a rail adapter or rings that fit the picatinny rail system.

Front and rear sights are removable as well as replacable. The rail mount system is the same as any other AR style picatinny rail so all AR type fore arm accessories can be mounted such as fore grips/bipods, lights, lasers, etc.

If you want extra mags, 44magnum.com seems to have very good pricing, I bought a couple short 10 round clips and an extra 25 round clip, shipping is 5 bucks per order and shipping priority mail.

Its quite possibly the funnest little rifle I've had and usually is the one the kids request first, to shoot. Mostly because it has that 'cool' factor.

No, that would need an adapter. I believe the picatinny rail is closer to 5/8". That red dot is designed for rifles that have the scope mount grooves in the top of the reciever, 3/8", such as a Remington 597 or pellet guns, etc.

This would fit. I've order from this site before, good shipping prices, not real fast shipping, but recieved in a little over a week. You kind of have to search the site as a lot of time just looking under a particular catagory only shows a partial list of items. For instance if you go to the red dot section, you won't find all the red dots they off, but if you search 'truglo red dot' it'll bring them all up. You could do the same for the BSA red dots, and they do make them ready to mount on your M&P
 
thanks for the heads up....does anyone make on that mounts directly to the picatinny rail system?

You actually have to work to find one that will NOT fit your M&P, you just happened to find one at Cabelas. The clue that it will NOT work for you is 3/8 inch or the word DOVETAIL. You want one that says Weaver Mount or Picatinny Rail Mount. I think that is 7/8 inch mount. I have a TruGlo that works fine for me. I think your success with sub $50 red dots will be hit or miss. Seems like about 1 out of 10 folks get a lemon, and the rest get by with their purchase. They are not great optics, but for the money can do for plenty of fun plinking. Also, kids seem to adapt to red dot sights easier than to a true cross hair reticle sight. Welcome and Have Fun.
 
It mounted directly to the quadrail. You might want to consider putting it or the original sights on the side. That would give you a backup in case one fails in the field. Have not zeroed it in yet. I plan to take it to the range tomorrow and compare to the original sights.
 
You can also get a riser to mount between your rail and whatever red dot you choose to elevate the red dot so that you could leave your open sights and use them to co-witness with the red dot. Some people like that, some don't. I just removed my open sights.
 
OK..now that I'm square on that, whats better?....tube style red dot? or the small little lens style? I can see I am going to have a very upset wife when I start decking this out :) I wish the gun would get here sooner. When I ordered it they told me 8 weeks to get it....you'd think these things were made from gold

I personally like the tube-style sights. I feel it makes you look straight down the gun as apposed to being able to move around the sight.
As for the wait time, I live in Springfield, MA and go to the S&W range all the time. I ordered one right from their retail store with having to wait "til the middle of next week", which is now going on 3 weeks!!! I have a pile of upgrades sitting on my floor just waiting for it to come in! :-)

:) does anyone actually "know" why it's taking so long? I mean 8 weeks is a bit on the long side. Is it demand? are they changing something? I'm dying to get this gun out on the range with my daughter!!!!

Not sure why the long wait. They've been at every gun show I've been to this year, which is where I acquired mine from. However, the few LGS I've been too never have them.
