Took the boys out shooting some targets last night. I bought the oldest boy the Sig 522 and the youngest the 10-22FS.
Some differences in the Sig and M&P that I noticed are, the Sig has a noticeably longer trigger pulled, not as hard of a pull, but I'd have to shoot it more to get familiar with where it breaks at. The M&P seems to be right there, breaking much sooner.
Also notice the Sig, while holding the bolt open on the last shot, its held open against the empty magazine, so when you remove the mag, it closes.
Both shot equally well, although I was better with the M&P, most likely because I've shot it more.
The magazine was the big difference. No load assist on the Sig, and once you get down to the last 10 or so rounds, its very hard on the finger. I mentioned this to my son and he said its easy to load, I said just wait till you get some more in the mag. Soon he said, 'its getting harder to load' lol. He loaded 5 mags and was done loading saying his fingers were getting sore. I found a place that sells a thumb loader for about 10 bucks and seems to be well received with regards to loading the 522 mag. I think it will be the next buy.
When the mag is installed in the 522, there is a lot of play all around, but it doesn't appear to affect performance of the rifle. It cycled everything fine, only had 4 or 5 failure to fire on some winchester 333, which every 22 auto I have has issues with the 2 boxes I've tried so far. CCI Blazers shot without any failure.
Needless to say, he thoroughly enjoyed his new rifle, its a fine gun. I'm very happy with my 15-22, the 522 didn't make me want to trade, but if I had the 522 as it comes stock, I might be inclined to want the 15-22, mostly because of the full rails and the actual last shot hold open. I'd get used to the trigger and the play in the magazine, not affecting performance, didn't bother me. However, I really like my load assist on my 15-22 mags.
The 10-22FS shot well and without any issues of any kind. Both boys shot surprisingly well for their first time out with their new rifles. They're looking forward to another outing tonight, hope the rain stays away long enough!
