Took the boys out shooting some targets last night. I bought the oldest boy the Sig 522 and the youngest the 10-22FS.

Some differences in the Sig and M&P that I noticed are, the Sig has a noticeably longer trigger pulled, not as hard of a pull, but I'd have to shoot it more to get familiar with where it breaks at. The M&P seems to be right there, breaking much sooner.

Also notice the Sig, while holding the bolt open on the last shot, its held open against the empty magazine, so when you remove the mag, it closes.

Both shot equally well, although I was better with the M&P, most likely because I've shot it more.

The magazine was the big difference. No load assist on the Sig, and once you get down to the last 10 or so rounds, its very hard on the finger. I mentioned this to my son and he said its easy to load, I said just wait till you get some more in the mag. Soon he said, 'its getting harder to load' lol. He loaded 5 mags and was done loading saying his fingers were getting sore. I found a place that sells a thumb loader for about 10 bucks and seems to be well received with regards to loading the 522 mag. I think it will be the next buy.

When the mag is installed in the 522, there is a lot of play all around, but it doesn't appear to affect performance of the rifle. It cycled everything fine, only had 4 or 5 failure to fire on some winchester 333, which every 22 auto I have has issues with the 2 boxes I've tried so far. CCI Blazers shot without any failure.

Needless to say, he thoroughly enjoyed his new rifle, its a fine gun. I'm very happy with my 15-22, the 522 didn't make me want to trade, but if I had the 522 as it comes stock, I might be inclined to want the 15-22, mostly because of the full rails and the actual last shot hold open. I'd get used to the trigger and the play in the magazine, not affecting performance, didn't bother me. However, I really like my load assist on my 15-22 mags.

The 10-22FS shot well and without any issues of any kind. Both boys shot surprisingly well for their first time out with their new rifles. They're looking forward to another outing tonight, hope the rain stays away long enough!

differances

Ya i have a 15-22 and my buddy just picked up the 522. We made our second trip to the range yesterday and there were only acouple things i liked about his gun.

The 522 does have a better trigger in my opinion, its alot smother. Once you get your own optics on it and sighted in the gun is really accurate. Down sides like u said is the no load assist on the mags. I always laughed because i could load my 2 mags for my 15-22 before he could fully load 1.

I did tell my buddy that since he can weld, can fabricate some stuff i told him to open the mag and make a load assist because ppl would buy them fast. And i really did hate the fact that after u pull the empty mag out it closes the mag, which in my mind really isnt safe(gotta check every time we switched guns if it was loaded because i couldnt see in the chamber like my 15-22.)

I would recommend the the 15-22 to anyone because of the rails, performance, and ease to clean. And the 522 you have to pay an extra $20 for the rails if you want them where the 15-22 comes with all 4 included. And i payed $450 with taxes and transfers for the A-1 style when we payed close to $500 and it wanst even ready to shoot out of the box(no optics included.)

So just wait till you guys get addicted to all the accessories you can put on it, your pocket wont like you too much:cool:

What is this I hear about the Sig522 not having enough rail? :D

Glad you and your boys had fun... that's what it's all about.

You can get a loader that will be a lot of help for the Black Dog mags(same as Sig mag)
They run about $10
Might even be faster than loading a 15-22 mag

I believe that is the loader I found, will be getting a couple.

As for the picture of the 522 with rails, very nice looking, I'd already checked that out. If it were my rifle, I'd be buying that barrel cover.

The 522 I got him was the OD green, the one selling about a hundred cheaper than the black models. It came with 3 rails to go on the barrel cover, plenty good enough for him to trick it out. I bought the gun for 383, tax included. Bought him a .30 cal ammo can and a brick of CCI Blazer (each boy actually), and a red dot to get them started. Other accessories, they are on their own :D I was just looking for something to get them outdoors and off the video games. I'd been shooting regularly for the past year and they always enjoy shooting with me so I'm hoping it isn't a passing fancy for them.:)

Oldest boy, he wants more mags, for the price (looks like about 25 bucks each) I might just talk him in to a BD 50 rnd drum since it has the load assist built in and its not much more than two 25 rnd mags.

I picked up a cheap NCStar red dot open sight for the 10-22FS(I think it is model DAB), second time out and the activation knob was loose and it won't turn off or switch to the green color. I hope its a fluke, it was easy to sight in and the youngest boy was shooting the spinning ground hog and 2.5" targets with it quickly. Sent an email to NCStar and they are having me return it, hope the second one lasts longer. If not, I'll probably get another truglo red dot, have two and both work very well.

I'd read in more than one place that BD is who made the magazine for the 522 for Sig. It's a great rifle, no complaints, just noticed the differences.

yep, thats the one I found (on another site). Thanks for the link, I added it to my wish list as there are a few other things I will be getting for some other stuff from Midway.

I myself am torn between the 15-22 and SIG 522. I am leaning toward the 15-22 because of the included sights and the fact I've already shot one a few times.

Where did you find the SIG 522 for $383 w/tax? I've been scouring the 'net and can't find any under $431

At the last gun show I went to in Wichita KS. They had 349 on the rifle itself, comes in a big plastic case with rails and bolt handle in the pistol grip. Also comes with a longer butt stock pad. This dealer usually hits all the gunshows close to me, they are from Protection Kansas. I'd also bought my 15-22 from them at a show a couple months ago for 395 plus tax (that was for the 811033, threaded barrel with flash hider), they were up to 425 for the same gun at this show.

Again, it was the OD Green which are about a hundred bucks under the black version (and I hear the black version does not include the rails).

Here's a link to an online source Sig Arms Rifles/Shotguns sig arms sig sauer 522 rifle, sig - TheGunSource for 357.00, they want 430 for the black version, 537 for the newer black with full rails.

The problem with "load assist" on mags is that it provides a fairly large opening for dirt and other **** to get inside your mag. I also like that my mags for the 522 work just fine with my CMMG conversion kit for my AR's.

I don't find dirt to be an issue with the M&P 15-22, but I pretty much keep all my guns out of the mud and muck.
