No its not foolproof, I personally know the 2 guys that own the hydro dip company in Meridian Id. the dipping isn't all that difficult but it takes practice! The hard part is the finish coat that you have to spray on to protect the film. They utilze several different automotive clear coats and a spray booth. After the item dipped comes out of the film process they have a gentle rain bath that the item is placed in for a while that helps set the film. Then the item drys for 24 hours and then it is sprayed with the clear coat.
I got to thinking when I first saw this post. So I pulled the trigger and ordered a kit from one of the ones online: DIY Camo Dip kit by EZDipKits.com
I watched the video a couple of times and have an idea what I need to do. So we will see when it comes in. Will practice on one of the mags first.
But this prompted me having to buy a barrel wrench and vise adapters from tacticool22... now I have to go out and buy a vise. Look at me, keeping the economy going!
I haven't taken pictures yet, but I have done the first 5 magazines and here is what I learned:
1 - take your time
2 - 1 tub of water, 1 dip. This one i messed up twice. I dipped a mag end then put another piece of film in and tried again. Film didn't like that. I then had to empty and refill then go again. That's a lot of wasted water.
3 - You can correct mistakes. After the failure of the "double-dipping" I did my best to clean off the failed film. Then sanded off the remnants and re-applied the base coat then dipped again.
4 - well ventilated area. the activator stinks... do it outside.
5 - Depending on what you are looking for in a finish you only need a couple of coats of clear to seal it all in.
I went with the "dead Headz" film in silver and on a black magazine it looks good and its subtle, not over the top.
