Bore Sights

what kind of "bore-sighter" is it? if its the 'shell' variety obviously it wouldnt work since it would need to be in the breach and a 223 and a 22 are nowhere near the correct size
if its a universal that goes in the end of the barrel then you should be ok
personally i just remove the upper from the lower and look through the bore--i am old school since my Dad and Grandpa were around when Lasers were still Sci-Fi

like said above if it's one that goes in the barrel then yes. But it will not "sight in your rifle" It might get you close, and it might not. It's a 22 and ammo costs next to nothing, put up a large piece of paper and walk up to 10yds and see where it hits, then adjust your sights accordingly.

I've got a Bushnell end of the barrel type, and have sighted in a couple of
different optics with it on the 15-22, and a few others.
It gets it on the paper, and is actually pretty darned close, in most instances.
If I could fire out in my back yard, then I'd go the puncha paper method,
but I prefer hitting my shooting areas ready to rock!

You can boresight the M16 or M&P15 easily by clamping the upper receiver in a suitable device and looking down the barrel at a distant, defined object like a window corner or similar. Then move the sights to the same point of aim. This will easily get you "on the paper" at .22LR ranges. But mechanical zero should do the same thing. There is no substitute for actually zeroing the rifle.
I've found a good "battlesight" zero to be the same 50 yards I use for the 5.56mm versions. But rather than yielding a 200 meter zero it works well in the 25-75 yard range. Maybe 100, but you're beyond iron sight range there with the .22LR trajectory.
