Default Best Zombie Gun Ever?

In honor of World War Z being made into a movie, I thought I would pose the question.

Is the M&P 15-22 the best Zombie Gun ever?

Let's look at the facts:
  • Large magazine capacity
  • Low recoil
  • Good effective range
  • Good accuracy
  • Optic choices galore
  • Lightweight
  • Low heat (won't overheat barrel)
  • Cheap ammo by the buckets
  • Accessories by the dozen
  • Quieter than most firearms
  • Some models can work with silencers

What say you? ..... If you don't agree, suggest what you think may be the best (I can always add more to my collection).

Maybe good for killing zombie rabbits and squirrels. But I don't know about regular zombies.

I would pick up my Hi-Point 995TS for zombies before I grab my 15-22.

But if all I had was a 15-22 then that would have to work.

i have a trifecta of terror...

Trusty 15-22 is first choice for close-quarters for the reasons listed

backup- Ruger Mark III with red dot

lastly--Savage Arms 17HMR with a 12x on top...for sniper op

hand to hand i'd like a KuKri....or a wood bat with rebar through it

I'm grabbing my AR15 in a zombie apocalypse. It is all of the following:
  • Large magazine capacity - yup.
  • Low recoil - yup.
  • Good effective range - yup.
  • Good accuracy - yup.
  • Optic choices galore - yup.
  • Lightweight - not so much, although not terrible.
  • Low heat (won't overheat barrel) - not too worried.
  • Cheap ammo by the buckets - I don't plan on buying ammo if zombies are attacking, I'm just gonna take it.
  • Accessories by the dozen - obviously.
  • Quieter than most firearms - nope, don't really care.
  • Some models can work with silencers - yup.

All of this with the added bonus of having at least double the power.

I would go classic, Sawed off breakaction double barrel shotgun. Backup weapon would be a dust buster with a machete. I figure hacking gets messy and style points would be the national currency so call me bill gates.

Oh yeah uh... 15-22 looks cool and is very handy but other than the light weight, I don't know that it would get the job done. Anybody else seceretly hope it happens?

it needs to be a semi-auto, full auto is just a waste.

I would say Ar15 (Maybe the M416, as it works with water in it) aswell and a nice sniper next to it.

Well from what you see in movies, zombies don't go down very easily, so I wouldn't want to be armed with a .22. I also say shotgun (mossberg 500) or if it's a handgun, nothing less than a .357 magnum.

What did u mean by "hopes it happens"? The 15-22 getting the job done or a zombie infestation?

Benelli Nova for the shotty. All the benefits and beauty of a Benelli minus the jamming issues of a semi when it gets too dirty. For a rifle I'm going with a Sig .552 with a reflex.

As for the actual infestation, I don't think it is really feasable. The zombies would have to strike extremely hard and fast before people would lay them down. I honestly can't see anything like Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later. You might get a small group of zombies at the most and people would notice and kill them before it ever became an epidemic. Just my .02

(i would hope it's obvious that this isn't ALL my ammo, that would have been a TIME CONSUMING setup and breakdown, just a little of this and a little of that for a funny photo )

For starters, saying there's a best of something EVER is asking to eventually be proven wrong
I bet the .22LR would do alright, as zombies decompose a bit, perhaps have softer skulls being all undead and whatnot?
But anyway, out of what's in my closet/safe, I'd prefer to use my mossberg 500 (7+1) with bandolier and bag of slugs and buck If I have three friends, they can use the Winchester model 12, Marlin 336 and Mosin Nagant, and if there are two more folks, the weakest of 'em get the Winchester .22LR bolt-action, and the Remington Nylon 66 .22LR semi-auto. I have a LOTTA handguns, and I would definitely have around four of 'em on me LoL, my SW 5906 9mm (lotsa double stack mags) my SW1911 for power and reliability, my GP100 .357 6"bbl , and my 629-2 .44 mag 3" bbl, Ok ok, I could probably let a friend use one of 'em, but I do have different holsters for 'em all that I could wear all at the same time. Ideally, I'd have a friend who's not so accurate a shooter be my ammo carrier, and I'd make sure I cover their ***

Very easily could have been rusted in a day, but the first thing I do when I'm done shooting it, is I squirt a buncha windex down the barrel to neutralize the corrosives, give it a minute or two and run a patch, then I WD-40 down the barrel to get rid of the moisture from the windex, then after a minute or two I run a patch, then I rem-oil as I usually do, and that makes cleaning pretty easy. Little extra pain in the butt cleaning but the ammo is cheap! My Mosin is a 'beater' anyway, but having a 'beater' doesn't mean I want it rusty, and the bore and bolt are lookin good. gun is rust free

I was a black-powder-only shooter for a few years! Now I use synthetic 777 in my black powder guns, but I used to deal with AWFUL black powder cleaning all the time

In a zombie-apocalypse however, you may be right! I don't know if I'll be toting windex around, but if I put a plow on my Denali, it's feasible

When I first read the title to this thread I got excited for a zombie apocalypse... That truly is the hardest part about a ZA... Pretending you're not excited/hoping for one.

In regards to the 15-22 as the best, I have been arguing that amongst my gun buddies for a while. I think the OP was referring to .22lr being readily available at pretty much every Walmart and sporting goods store across the country. While everyone else is clamoring for larger calibers, slugs and buckshot you could easily find ammo (agreed on not purchasing it at that point).

As for being strong enough to actually do some damage, they always tell you in the movies to go for the head anyway. My real world experience isn't in high stress situations so I know I'm going to miss some shots. I think missing with .22 would be more palatable than missing with my 9mm or larger caliber rifles.

Maybe when it happens though, everyone will get automatic head shots regardless of the weapon like they do in the movies..? I wouldn't mind that either.

i got my 1943 91/30 recently (armory refurbished, almost new looking), and i just pour a 16oz bottle of water down it, and then bring it home and clean with hoppes and oil with remoil using the original cleaning rod (within 2 hours). it's by far the nastiest thing i've cleaned.

just make sure you have the bayonet on it, and stand at least 5 ft away to avoid getting poked

got mine a month or two ago too! and I LOVE it, best $99 purchase I've ever made! and of course I keep the bayo' on it! The original cleaning rod is a bit short... but I'm not about to complain

If you think that's nasty shoot some Goex authentic Black Powder through a cap n ball gun, WHAT A MESS, but the smoke, clouds of fire, and bassy BOOM are kind of worth it I have around 7 (I buy and sell them often so exact number escapes me at this moment) cap n ball guns, that would be 'last resort' hand outs in a Zombie Apocalypse if my cartridge guns are all claimed. As a few people have said, the worst thing about a zombie apocalypse is secretly wishing it would happen x-D lol

I also just realized that I would pick my AR because the magazines load in half the time. I definitely don't want to deal with the horrors of loading a rimfire magazine just right in a zombie infestation.

If Resident Evil taught me anything, it's that you need at least Barry's .357 magnum to pop zombie heads.

I would take my Benelli SBE2 with my 3 1/2 inch rounds, my 15-22 would be my second choice of my 2 guns. Zombies would be fun but to go kill the stuff in Twilight.......HAHAHAHA

God I hate that Twilight stuff

Maybe it's just because I'm a (dirty) old ******* I don't get this zombie thing. Seems that if they moved any slower they'd need a walker. What's the deal????

depends on the zombies. are you talking undead, nuclear, or virus zombies? some are faster/smarter than others i'd imagine.

It may look like I went all tacticool overboard but I bet this would at least get me a few minutes time before the flood became too many.

might be hard to see, but the white bumper sticker says "I <3 Zombies"

(and NRA and G.O.A.L. stickers on the right side of the rear window)

The trunk holds more long-guns than I've ever been able to obtain at any time!

You are right about reloading being slower. But no matter the choice at some point we all have to reload.

solution #1 = buy more mags
solution #2 = buy more mags & teach kids to reload

Well then I will need some disassembled 25 rd mags, since I live in CA, and then reassemble them when the zombies attack.

Define Zombie

ALREADY DEAD (like in that old Black and White movie)

They move slow so 22 maybe good---but if already dead---well another small whole is of no use----may need flame thrower.

JUST DON'T LIKE THE LIGHT (i.e. Omega man)

22 good idea as there were very many and have lots and lot of ammo mayt be really good idea.

DON'T LIKE THE LIGHT PLUS (i.e. Legend)

22 ain't gonna cut it!

According to the Zombie survival guide all you have to do is kill the brain. You could do this with a high powered pellet gun. The M&P 15-22 gets my nod. You can carry 1000 rounds of .22lr and still move effectively. Not so easy with .308, .223, 12Ga. etc.....

I don't think I'd be satisfied until a good chunk of their head is missing, luckily I also have my Mosin Nagant (7.62x54R) and someone is working on 10 rd mags for it.

last i heard on those 10 rounders they were going to cost $20 more than the whole rifle with accessories... and then there's the heat issue from firing too fast/much.

personally i am hoping for a 15-22 pistol for Christmas...add a single-point sling and about 25 magazines...a good melee weapon...and some home grown boombooms and i will be golden--

course i live in BFE in a 3-story farmhouse so posting the young lad upstairs as a sniper will help

Where would that be from? There's a guy on the Gun & Game Forums whos making his own and don't think he'll be charging that much for them.

i honestly couldn't tell you how i even found it, i was originally looking for a muzzle brake for the 91/30 that secured like the m44 one on the front sight (doesn't exist) and ended up on some random site, and several links later i had read some outrageous price, and watched that same video thinking cool, but not so cool i'd spend a ton on it.

Default One of my favorite topics...

First of all, according to every movie, manual and "knitting circle" about zombies, injuring the brain or brain stem is enough to effectively kill or re kill a zombie. Won't know until the day arrives. A .22LR would be quite effect at penetrating a health human skull at 75 yards. 75-25 yards would be the ideal range to engage this type of target. Anything further would see higher misses, less effective shot placement, and less effective penetration. Anything closer you would either have to leave the AO or fight to the possible death.

The great thing about the M&P 15-22 is it's easy for anyone to shoot, maintain, and build muscle memory for other AR style rifles. Controlled Pairs (double tap) is easy with little practice due to recoil. Add a supressor to the 15-22 and you'll have an accurate, light, easy to shoot silent death stick.

Not to mention ammo is EXTREMELY light. A thousand rounds probably weighs no more than 10lbs. A normal infantry combat load of 210 rounds and 7 steel mags probably weighs close to 15. Add the fact that .22LR is extremely affordable to stock up prior to Z-Day. As well as the ammo can be found almost any where. I've seen gas stations (in the country) carry several different brands of .22LR. This helps as you travel the states looking for safe areas and mowing down the undead hordes from hell.

As far as some fourms and other people I have talked to have suggested having multiple (10's) of different firearms. This is a bad idea. Try running with 7 weapons, ammo, equipment and supplies. Not going to happen. Being light, fast, and stealthy would be key to surviving and re-populating the earth, I call dibs on Oliva Wilde. Also ammo is the key factor. If you are trying to find some "weird" or un-popular ammo to fit your Chinese imported 70's prototype bullpup pistol you're just carrying dead weight. Stick to popular reliable rounds (.22LR, .223, .308, 9mm, .45ACP etc). This will ensure that if you scavenge an area you can find ammo easily.

I would carry a 9mm or .45ACP handgun with threaded barrel for a surpressor, my Sig 516, M-P15-22. Not to heavy but still bulky.

I'm actually in the process of writing a zombie manual from more of a military and shooter standpoint.

Why not bring Chuck Norris on!!! Forget about those Zombies???

Superman wears Chuck Norris PJ's.

When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night he checks his closet for Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris has already been to Mars; that's why there are no signs of life there.

They once made a Chuck Norris toilet paper, but it wouldn't take **** from anybody.

There used to be a street called Chuck Norris but it was renamed because anybody who crossed it didn't survive.

He once kicked a horse in the chin. All it's decendands are known as Girrafes.

He can light a fire by rubbing two ice cubes together

Chuck Norris doesn't wear a watch, HE decides what time it is.

Chuck Norris doesn't turn on the light, he turns off the dark.

Once Chuck Norris destroyed one stone with 2 birds

I think we all know that the Zombie Apocalypse will never happen. Not because there aren’t Zombies out there trying (I’ve killed a couple today with a M&P 15-22), but rather because Chuck Norris lives amongst. One thing Chuck doesn’t like is Zombies ruining his day. You see, Chuck can take on an entire Zombie horde without messing up his hair. The secret is with the sidekick. But what would happen if Chuck managed to get bitten???

As we all know, this is an impossibility, but say if the laws of the universe did somehow bend, and some poor dead brain eater did manage to get its festering teeth around a certified Chuck Norris bicep, what do you think would happen???

also recommended is the M1917 trench knife, which the guide calls a trench spike. obviously, a last ditch weapon but it would excel at skull penetration.

answer- 5.56 M4 carbine with plenty of ammo. make every shot count
Sans my 15-22; if I had to have a non-M4 carbine, I would probably go along with a few of the earlier recommendations and have a pistol caliber carbine. Primarily, because I could have shared mag/caliber and not have to carry a variety of ammo.

The Hi-point has been around for a long time, and I think Taurus has put together some kind of abomination (said with affection). Now if only Springfield Armory would offer one that uses their XD magazines.

Chuck Norris tested positive for steroids, not because he uses them, but because steroids are derived from Chuck Norris.

Parking spaces with a handicap sign doesn't mean it's reserved for handicap people, it means that's what's going to happen to you if you take Chuck Norris' parking spot.

For those who haven't seen it. Here is the new Taurus Carbine I referenced earlier. Not sure why it is listed as 10+1 capacity. It screams for hi-cap mags.
