Default What do you use for plinking targets?

Looking for some new ideas for plinking...

I have some spinners and paper targets. Just looking for some new ideas to shoot at.

I usually shoot with a buddy, so if you have any ideas on a plinking game I'd love to hear it.

Charcoal briquettes, shotgun hulls, tums, bowling pins hung from a branch, tennis balls on the ground or floating in a pond, golf balls on the ground, green treated 4 by 4 by 4 floating or on the ground, assorted fruits and vegetables, fist sized clumps of clay/dirt, clay pigeons. Those should get you started....you are limited only by your imagination.

I scrounged up some old realtor signs. Great for posting targets on. Old realtors wouldn't be a bad idea either...

I bought five 6" plates along with a 2" and 3" hanging target from Newbold. They're made out of ballastic poylmer, or whatever you want to call it and are safe to shoot with pretty much anything as long as the bullet is ronud nose or spire point. Wadcutters and HP's cut a small hole and reduce target life, so its best not to use them. I mounted them on a portble target stand I made out of scrap wood and steel I had laying around.

My steel targets were getting quite worn and were begining to shoot back, if you know what I mean. They needed replacing badly and I though I'd try these since they were safer and could be used for large caliber weapons if I wanted.

The 6" plates are great for handguns. They work as advertised and I couldn't be happier. The smaller ones I bought for use with my AR. The fast little 5.56 passes though the larger plates without disturbing them, but work as advertised with the 2" and 3" hanging targets. I'm yet to try a big bore highpowered rifle with the larger plates so I can't comment there.

So far I'm quite happy with these. Aside from the safety aspect and increased caliber range, they are much easier to transport than my old steel plate rack.

Edit to add: One of my favorite plinking targets is gravel. Yea, it might not be the safest, but turning a 1.5" piece of rock into a teriffic puff of dust with an AR from 50m is quite satisfying and always makes me grin.

Paintballs on golf tees. Cheap reactive fun. +1 for the paintball +2 for the tee after the paintball is hit -3 if you break the tee first. Bring some paper and a pencil.
Steel spinner targets. More expensive, but reactive and fun, plus they make noise.
Dueling Trees. First shooter with all the targets on their side looses.
Or the shooter at the end of the magazines with the most targets on their side looses. Way different tactics between those two.
This could be fun and infuriating with two shooters Impact-22 Rolling Steel Target - YouTube
Or use two and race to a finish line.

A plate rack (6 plates). A pull on the rope resets them, and there is no mess left on the range. If it gets too boring, back up and run against a timer.

Eggs and Coleman® stove canisters.

Eggs:
Pros; exsplatsive, biodegradable, cheap
Cons; white (hard to see against snow), delicate transport

Coleman® stove canisters:
Pros; awesome to blow up, canister can still be used as target after explosion
Cons; more expensive than eggs (roughly $4.00 for 3 canisters), explosions are somewhat limited in size (he he)

At the end of the garden season, I make a trip to the farm where Mom has been growing cukes in some quantity. When she finally gets enough of them she lets the rest grow to maturity and when they are now no longer green and usable but yellow and over ripe they become targets. They explode great when struck with my 22 mag - very enjoyable!

well, to turn an otherwise dull range day into a whole bunch of excitement, I recommend tannerite!

Here's the link:

TANNERITE

and why, yes, a .22lr works just fine

Default Caution

I would be very hesitant to shoot at anything (tennis balls, pieces of wood, etc) floating in water - far to easy to get uncoltrollable ricochets, especially with a .22

Ice. Cheap, easy to come by and explodes when hit. Best of all, no messy clean up. Just walk away. Any container that can be easily emptied of a piece of ice will do. Milk jugs work when you freeze them and peal off the plastic. A .22 or .17HMR really make them shatter, so anything bigger would be a (pardon the pun) blast. Great reactive target for both adult and kids.

we recently tried the Darkotic Zombie targets ( my kid went ga-ga!) also love Golf Balls or Softballs....Bowling Pins are amazingly fun ( put some tannerite on the front and dont tell the shooter! hehe)

old satellite dishes are good too ( legally acquired!!!) the metal ones make a nice PING when you smack em...

I like to use tennis balls hung on a string at 30-50 feet for a .22 handgun. Bowling pins are fun also at 25 yards for centerfire. Shotgun hulls at 25 yards for a .22 rifle also works well.

I agree shooting anything floating on water is not a good idea.

Hockey pucks make a nice moving target when rolled from your shooting position and count how many times you can hit them before they stop rolling. They can take quite a few hits before they are totally destroyed.

I saw those a couple weeks ago but didn't buy one.. I thought they would be to heavy for the .22 to move them much on impact.

How much movement do you get out of those after impact with the .22?

I like the old penny suckers. The ones that are a little bigger than a quarter to 50 cent size. You can buy them by the bag full. They are cheap.and explode when hit. stick the stem in the ground or a board or anywhere.
With halloween comming up everyone should be selling them.
I like the green one's (for eating ) and the red for shooting.

Since ive been packing to move ive been finding more and more stuff that i was going to throw away. So my buddy insisted that i use my old cds and dvd for skeet, then ive just been collecting things that make a nice pop when hit. Old light bulbs i like, but have to be the white incandescent bulbs so u can see when their hit.

the cube has been kind of a disappointment for the .22--now when you hit it with a .40 S&W thats another story

we are going to snag one of the spheres this weekend--another group had one 2 weekends ago and it was a hoot

The enviros would have a fit about those things.
If it's your property, do what you want. But if it's public land, I hope you pick most of it up. It makes us shooters look bad and tends to close down poular areas when there is a lot of garbage left behind.

I agree the cube is less than stellar when popping it with .22 rounds...kind of lost my mind for a second and forgot we were talking .22 plinking (the ball is much better). When I'm playing around with 5.56mm, .45 cal, and 12 gauge rifled slugs, that cube is a rockin!!!

Now that is what I like to hear. Wish we had more people like you in our area.

I am ashamed of some folks in my area who use our very crude public shooting/sight-in area. They bring TVs, computers and anything else they don't want to haul to the dumps and shoot everything into hundreds of pieces which are left for other responsible shooters to pick up. They have even shot the garbage cans left to put trash left over in so they look like a piece of swiss cheese. Any signs telling folks about rules in the shooting area are also shot beyond recognition. And even traffic signs in rural areas are blasted with no regard to the houses behind these signs.
A few bad apples ( slobs ) will always ruin it for the rest of us responsible hunter/shooters/humans.

Sorry if I got off topic on this one.
