Krylon Dual Satin Finish
For those of you painting your furniture on your 15-22's, I had to throw this out there to you. I have an old beat up .410 New Haven Bolt Action Shotgun with a cracked stock and decided that I couldn't really hurt things worse than they were. I sanded down the wood stock and filled in all of the dents and dings and attempted to fix the cracked stock by filling in the cracks with some epoxy. After sanding it down for the final time, I painted the stock with forest green Krylon Dual Spray Paint and Primer all in one satin finish. Absolutely beautiful finish! It looks and feels like a brand new synthetic stock and the cured paint feels rock solid. I'm regretting the Krylon Fusion that I painted my grip and stock with on the 15-22. It's just too smooth, almost makes the 15-22 look fake and doesn't seem to hold up like I thought it would. In the coming weeks, I'm going to sand down the stock, grip and fore end grip and give these items a new coat of the Krylon Dual (if I can find a sand or desert tan). I think I've found my go to paint for all of my outdoor project and the 15-22 is next in line.
As for the .410, my crack repair did not hold up. It cracked again as soon as I tightened the stock screw up. From all of my reading, this is a design flaw with the New Haven. However, after a thorough cleaning (which it has probably never had in the past 30 years), it functions like brand new and with the exception of the crack by the stock screw, it looks like a brand new gun. I see them on Gun Broker all the time for $75 - $100 and might just invest in one strictly for the stock. At this point, it is such a fine functioning gun that I might pay to have the stock repaired at the local gun smith or I may even take the stock to a furniture repair shop and let them have a go at it.
